Guide to Golf Skirts & Golf Skorts

Golf clothes and attire have come a long way over the last few decades. I remember khaki, blue or black shorts and pants being the golf standard for both men and women.

Golf skirt designs are now be fun, flattering, and comfortable.

Each year, I see more and more unique designs, styles and brands. I love all the additional choices and that traditional golf attire is changing.

And a bonus is that many of the golf skirts are stylish enough to be worn on or off the golf course.

Ladies Golf Skirts & Golf Skorts

What is the Difference Between a Golf Skirt and a Golf Skort?

To distinguish the two, a golf skort is a golf skirt with the shorts built into the actual skirt. Just like in tennis. Since golf requires movement and is a fairly active sport with lots of bending, swinging and rotating the body, shorts are a great addition to a golf skirt.

The majority of golf skirts on the market today are actually golf skorts and include the shorts.

What is the Difference Between a Golf Skirt and a Tennis Skirt?

The biggest difference between a golf skirt and tennis skirt is the length. Tennis skirts tend to be much shorter and this shorter length is much more acceptable on the tennis court than on a golf course.

With more casual attire on golf courses these days, I have seen tennis skirts worn on the golf course. Just remember to keep in mind the dress code and to check with the pro shop if you are unsure.

What are the Different Golf Skirt Lengths?

There are various lengths in golf skirts seen on the golf courses. And thankfully, they are not as long as the golf skirts worn in the early 1900’s, which were down to the ankles.

My favorite length is about 2-3 inches above the knee as I like to have enough coverage to be active and comfortable on the course.

Ladies golf skirts range in length from 14″ to 20″ (measuring from the wait down). Tennis skirts tend to be shorter at about 13″ in length.

Modest Golf Skirts With More Coverage (18″ – 20″)

I you are looking a modest golf skirt or a golf skirt with more covering, the best bet is to go with 18″ – 20″ in length.

Regular Length Golf Skirts

I would say the average length of a golf skirt is about 16″ – 17″. I find Golftini Golf Skirts to be a good average length and they are one of my favorite golf skirt brands. I find their stretchy performance material used in this style of skirt is light, comfortable and breathable for hot days in the heat.

Short Golf Skirts

This LuluLemon Skort is a very cute fashionable skirt that I have seen many women and girls wear on the golf course. They have a few different colors and have a regular length as well as a longer “tall” length for a little more coverage.

LuluLemon Golf Skirt

I have this Cityoung golf skirt and it is really cute. It’s actually not too short for me as it has a 14.5″ length.

New Styles of Ladies Golf Skirts

There are so many different styles are being used in designing the latest golf skorts. You will see golf skorts with ruffles, pleats, and other accessories as well as bright colors and fun patterns.

So many to choose from!

Where Can I Find Affordable Golf Skirts That Are Easy on the Budget

You can find affordable or inexpensive golf skorts in many stores and online. The Internet has made it so much easier to find golf-specific clothes at very good prices and discounts.

Be sure to check discounts especially at the end of the golf season as well as right before the golf season starts. Stores try to get rid of inventory before the new fashion lines arrive.

Here are two brands that I like. In fact, I have a few in several different colors from each.

Where Can I Find Girls Golf Skirts?

I have found the best place to find girl’s golf skorts to be at PGA Tour Superstore as they have a great selection and are golf-specific. You can also find cute skirts at Athleta Girls, and Kohl’s.

Where Can I Find Ladies Golf Skirts / Golf Skorts Online?

My 3 go-to places online to look for women’s golf clothes are Amazon, PGA Tour Superstore , and ForeLadies Golf. These sites provide a nice brand assortment golf skirts / golf skorts (and other golf apparel) at different price points.

A Love/Hate Relationship with The 3 Wood

I have to admit that I have an interesting love/hate relationship with my 3 wood. If you do too, we’re in the same boat and we’re not alone.

I have many friends who have the same feelings about this club. When it works, the distance you can get from a 3 wood is amazing and you might think, “I should be using this club more” or “how can I make this shot every time?”.

But alas, the relationship is a rocky one.

Aargh - Why Is a 3 Wood So Hard to Hit?

When it doesn’t work, you might then wonder why you even use it. My 3 wood often gets some serious time-outs in my golf bag, sometimes even in the garage so I am not even tempted to bring it out.

Let’s talk about why this club is so hard to hit and a little later, talk about how to hit a 3 wood so it can be more consistent for you.

Why Is a 3 Wood So Hard to Hit?

A 3 wood often times can be hard to hit because it is one of the longest golf clubs with the exception of the driver and the loft is very low comparatively.

Both factors make the 3 wood such a challenge to hit consistently.

3 Wood Shaft Length

With a 3 wood shaft length being the longest of the fairway woods, these shaft lengths can differ greatly depending on what type of club you are using. A women’s club versus senior men’s shaft versus a men’s regular shaft will measure at different lengths. Make sure you are using the right length that is most suitable for you.

The length of a 3 wood ranges from 42 – 43 inches. Just to give you a sense of the difference in length, a 7 iron is around 35 – 37 inches. When you consider trying to control the golf club in motion as it swings around your body, a 7-inch difference is a lot.

3 Wood Loft

In addition to the longer length of a 3 wood, factor in the loft of a 3 wood. The 3 wood golf club is designed to provide a lower trajectory or loft than most other golf clubs. The golf ball won’t get as much height as a higher lofted club like a 5 wood or a hybrid.

The loft of a 3 wood is usually around 15 – 16 degrees. Again, compare that to a 7 iron, which is 34 – 35 degrees and you can see the difference. Remember that usually the higher loft a club is, the easier it will be to get the ball off the ground.

When Should I Use a 3 Wood?

Technically, you can use a 3 wood anywhere on the course. However, there are several places are more common to use a 3 wood.

In the Fairway

A 3 wood is a fairway wood, so naturally, golfers like to use it in the fairway. Usually reserved for a 2nd or even 3rd shot depending on whether the hole is a par 4 or a par 5.

Using it here in the short grass is the most common place to use the 3 wood and when hit well, can help provide the needed distance.

Off the Tee

A 3 wood can also be used off the tee.

Some golfers prefer to hit the 3 wood instead of their driver off the tee because the 3 wood can provide more consistency here.

Use a 3 Wood Off the Tee

You are probably thinking to yourself “What? I thought you said the 3 wood provides less consistency and is harder to hit?”

Yes, in the fairway or when hitting off the ground or off the deck.

But, hitting the 3 wood off a tee where the ball is elevated is a whole different story. Here, the 3 wood can be a blessing. Off the tee, hitting a 3 wood may be easier to control than hitting a driver.

If you are comparing the 3 wood vs driver and trying to decide which one to hit, most golfers do prefer to hit the driver when they want more distance.

But watch the tour professionals when they have a narrow fairway – many of them will pull out their 3 woods to tee off with.

When There is a Lot of Wind

Other times you may want to use the 3 wood is if there is a lot of wind and you don’t want the golf ball to travel as high in the air and be affected by the wind.

A low stinger or punch shot might be the best strategy in this scenario.

Can I Hit a 3 Wood From the Rough?

Hitting a 3 Wood From the Rough

It is not the best choice to hit a 3 wood from the rough.

Especially if the grass is long or thick.

Hitting woods out of the rough can be a challenge. The club has a hard time getting through longer grass as well as under the ball to get it up in the air.

Combining this with the lower loft of a 3 wood, it is going to be hard to hit it well and not duff it.

I have had many experiences trying to do this as I needed more distance and thought hitting a 3 wood out of the rough might work.

Most of these shots ended up as dribblers…going just a few yards and still having to hit from the rough on my next shot.

Do I Need a 3 Wood?

Do I Need a 3 Wood Question

The age-old question. Especially these days with so many other clubs and options to choose from.

Technically, you don’t need a 3 wood.

It is a preference and a personal choice each golfer has to make. Finding the right club that works for you and your game is what is important.

The beauty and allure of the 3 wood is that it is designed to provide the maximum distance aside from the driver. So the temptation is great, but it is known to be harder to hit than other clubs like the 5 wood, or let’s say a 4 hybrid.

Here are some other clubs that are oftentimes used in place of the 3 wood.

3 Wood vs Driver

When I first started golfing, I preferred using my 3 wood off the tee. My driver tended to get me into trouble and I found that there wasn’t much difference between the two in the driving distance as a beginner.

Today, I love using my driver off the tee and the gained distance compared to my 3 wood is pretty tangible.

However, I still drive with my 3 wood on long par 3’s or where I need to be more accurate on the drive to avoid trouble.

3 Wood vs 5 Wood

Every year I wonder if this is the year I should just keep my 3 wood in the bag when hitting from the fairway.

The quandry of using my 3 wood versus 5 wood is real. I am always tempted to pull out the 3 wood. The risk reward is what needs to be considered when using a 3 wood instead of 5 wood or other club. A well hit 3 wood will gain you some yardage…if you hit it well.

However, if you hit your 5 wood consistently, then it might make more sense to use the 5 wood instead of the 3 wood. A 3 wood that you hit inconsistently will put you in more trouble than using an easier more consistent club like the 5 wood.

3 Wood vs Hybrid

The same holds true for using a 3 wood versus hybrid golf club. If you hit a hybrid really well and are consistent with it, why not use the hybrid?

As far as distance, a 3 or 4 hybrid might not be quite as long in distance as the 3 wood.

However, think about the height, trajectory, and consistency of your longest hybrid and whether this outweighs the extra 10 yards or so in distance.

Remember that hybrids are designed to be easier to hit than fairway woods as they provide more loft, and are shorter in length than a 3 wood.

How to Hit a 3 Wood

Because the 3 wood provides a good deal of distance, using it can be a great asset to your golf game.

If you want to learn how to hit the 3 wood consistently and effectively and practice with the club, use these tips.

How to Hit a 3 Wood Off the Tee

  1. One of the biggest mistakes with golfers using the 3 wood off the tee is teeing the ball up too high. Because the 3 wood has a small club head, the ball doesn’t need to sit up as high as when hitting a driver.
  2. Be sure to align the tee and ball off the heel of your front foot just like the position of a driver.
  3. Make a nice easy swing and let it fly.
Hitting a 3 Wood off the Tee

How to Hit a 3 Wood Off the Fairway or Off the Deck

  1. You don’t want to feel as though you are hitting up on the ball like a driver. This will deloft the club even more and provide less loft. What this means is that it will be even harder to get the ball up into the air.
  2. Practice a sweeping motion and brush the ground. There is a small bit of hitting down on the ball, but only enough to allow you to get under the ball as you make contact.
  3. At address, line the golf ball up with the heel of your front foot.
  4. One common mistake is rushing the swing and trying to hit the ball hard as you can to to get maximum distance. Remember to slow it down and keep a good tempo. Slowing down and swinging steady actually helps keep the arms, hands and body from becoming too tense and tight as you are swinging and hitting the ball. And this relaxing movement will help the club do the work.
  5. Keep your head down and don’t bring the eyes up to watch where the ball goes. This usually ends up with the golfer topping the ball which is common when hitting a 3 wood off the fairway.
  6. Here’s a great drill that I have been using to help me with my 3 wood. Practice hitting your driver off the deck or from the fairway. Yep, you heard that right. It’s hard to do, but since the driver has even less loft than a 3 wood, it has helped improve my ability to get under the ball.

Drill for Hitting the 3 Wood From the Fairway

Except for going to the driving range and practicing with your 3 wood. The drill that I have used that has really helped me in getting a better contact with my 3 wood is one that I tried practicing a year or so ago.

Drill: Practice hitting your driver off the deck or from the ground. Yep, you heard that right. It’s hard to do, so do it carefully. Since the driver has even less loft than a 3 wood, it has helped improve my ability to get under the ball. And being able to get under the ball has improved my loft or airtime with the 3 wood.

Best Golf Instruction Video on How to Hit a 3 Wood

I like how Me & My Golf talks about “brushing” the ground in practice drills. “Holding the finish” is really important as well because it helps golfers stay in control and not overhit, keeping them on balance at the end of the swing.

Final Thoughts

The opportunities are great if we can learn how to hit our 3 wood effectively and consistently.

The temptation to use it when it is a challenging club to hit is hard to walk away from even though we have other options and choices that might make more sense.

But, the lure is great. I am still trying to figure this one out as distance has become important in my own golf game.

So, I still am out practicing and trying to improve my consistency with the 3 wood. Hoping that if I can learn how to hit it pure more times than not, it will improve my game.

14 Tips on How to Handle Golf Frustration

This month I played the best round of my life.

And a couple of weeks later, I played the worst round I’ve had in a long time.

In both situations, I was so high from playing so well and so low when I played so poorly. Crazy what this game can do to your emotional well-being. It’s like an emotional roller coaster.

Golf is Hard and Frustrating - Don't Give Up

After playing for many many years, I can attest that golf can be difficult, frustrating, annoying, painful, and emotional.

During these times, I sometimes wonder why I put so much time into practicing and playing. For what?

Why put myself through this pain? Especially on days where I just want to give up and walk off the course. Or rather curl up in a ball and cry. Yes, I admit golf has that effect on many, including myself.

But, I continue to play and still love it.

Maybe because the game is so challenging and yet addicting. Luring you to come back time after time with the possibility of playing an amazing round or scoring a record low, or getting a birdie or a hole in one.

On days that are a bit of a grind, I like to remind myself that golf is hard. It is meant to be challenging. We could get much more enjoyment out of the game if we are aware of this fact.

“Golf is a lot like life. It will test your patience. It will dazzle and baffle you with highs and lows, successes and frustrations.”

-Amy Alcott

Just look at the many variables that golfers must learn to become proficient.

Why is Golf So Hard?

I talk about this in another recent post on How to Build Consistency in Your Golf Game as well.

If one is looking at golf from the outside or as a non-golfer, it seems pretty boring. Hit a small white ball down the fairway with a golf club and get it in the hole. How hard can that be?

Well, if you have ever tried to do this seemingly simple act on a golf course with other golfers watching you, you know that this is far from the truth. And the reason is that are just so many variables in the golf game to learn, practice, and perfect.

“Like chess, golf is a game that is forever challenging but can never be conquered.”

– Harvey Penick

Reasons Why Golf Is So Hard And Challenging

Here is a list of many aspects to the game that one needs to learn and practice to be able to play golf.

  • The proper etiquette and behavior.
  • The official rules of the game.
  • How to hit 14 different clubs in the golf bag.
  • How to drive the ball off a tee, hit fairway shots and shots in the rough as well as mastering the short game.
  • How to avoid certain hazards like water, hills, bunkers, fescue, and long grass
  • How to hit shots from different lies and hazards especially if you end up in them.
  • How to play golf in all types of weather and environmental conditions.
  • How to be social and yet focus on your game.
  • How to perform under pressure or in competitive situations.
  • How to control your emotions on the golf course.
  • How to score well and practice good judgment and course management.
  • How to have the proper mindset while playing.

That’s a lot to work on just to be proficient and and be able to play this game! Remember this when your not having the greatest round or it is not going as well as expected. There is just so much that one needs to learn and master.

When Golf is Frustrating You, Don’t Give Up

When golf seems hard to you or you have a not-so-great day, don’t give up! It is meant to be a challenge. We all go through this as golfers. And you never know, that amazing round might just be right around the corner.

Here are a few ways to help you get back in the game after feeling dejected, annoyed, or frustrated with golf.

1. Take some time off.

Take a Break from Golf

Whether it is a couple of days or a week.

Take the time off and don’t think about your golf game.

Sometimes this may be all you need to recharge and come back. After this, you might find it was just an “off day” and you’ll be back to your normal self the next time you play.

2. Schedule a golf lesson.

Honestly, one time I picked up this bad shanking problem and couldn’t seem to get out of the bunkers, so I scheduled a 30-minute lesson with a pro.

Within 5 minutes he knew what I was doing wrong, told me how to fix it, and voila, I was back to my old self, confident in the bunkers.

Sometimes it just takes a professional who can see what you are doing wrong.

3. Head to the driving range or practice area.

Head to the Practice Range

For me, I like to take a couple of days off and then head to the range to work out any kinks and see if they are even still there. I like to see that my shots are working again and back to normal.

4. Get back out there.

Whether you take some time off, head to the practice range or see an instructor, be sure to get back out there and play.

Schedule your next round of golf.

Don’t let that one frustrating round or last few rounds deter you from teeing it up again. Golfers all have these rough patches and we can learn from these tougher days.

Since it will most likely happen from time to time, you’ll know what to expect and how to get beyond and overcome this same situation the next time it happens.

5. Play solo golf by yourself.

You can always just head out on the course by yourself. I like to play solo golf because there is no one around and I can be in my head, test things out and not have the pressure to perform. There is something serene and relaxing about playing solo.

6. Ditch the scorecard.

Some days, I ditch the scorecard and play for fun.

It can actually be pretty liberating, not having to keep a score and just go out and have a good time with your friends or golf buddies.

I realize this may be harder said than done especially if you have wagers going on, but if I am golfing without any bets, I just tell my partners I’m not keeping score. Especially if I just had a terrible round recently.

Not keeping score can be a nice break from always concentrating on the score. I can actually practice some shots without having any consequences as well.

7. Assess and learn.

What was it that made this round so frustrating? Was it a certain part of your game?

  • Were your drives slicing and putting you in trouble or bad spots?
  • Was it your chipping that ended up adding a few extra strokes?
  • Was your putting so off that you were putting out with 3 or 4 putts?

If you look at your round closely, you may realize that it is in fact just one part of your game that was off. It is so common to be down on ourselves and say ‘I’m a terrible golfer”, when in fact maybe it was just one area that can be an easy fix.

If you can improve in that area, it will be great for your golf game.

8. Use this situation as fodder for motivation.

After a particularly bad round a few years ago, I used it to motivate myself to improve.

I picked myself back up and became super motivated to improve upon those areas that needed help. I entered and competed in a few tournaments that year and even won a few. More than what I would have achieved had I not been motivated to improve upon my terrible round and weaknesses.

Carly Lloyd, one of the star midfielders of the US Women’s National Soccer team said they had a photo posted of their loss when the US was cut from the early rounds of the 2016 Rio Olympics to help motivate them for the next World Cup. To work harder and perform better the next go around.

They went on to win the next World Cup where Carly Lloyd had a hat trick and put in 3 goals in the back of the net in the final game to win it all.

Talk about motivation!

“I never learned anything from a match that I won.”

– Bobby Jones

Golf Mindset – How to Stop the Frustration During the Round

Everyone Has Bad Golf Days

When you have a bad day on the golf course, just know you are not alone. All golfers have days or rounds where nothing seems to go right and as expected.

There lies the crux of the matter.

Setting expectations is good in many ways, but what you expect may not always happen. We all have this expectation to play to a certain level each time we play golf. It’s not playing up to that expectation that lets us down in our minds.

If we play horribly or seem to not be able to perform to our standards, we can be so hard on ourselves. And it is a blow especially if playing competitively in a tournament, for a dollar nassau, or just even bragging rights.

Don’t Head Down the Emotional Spiral

If your game has gone downhill, we tend to start thinking more and more about what isn’t working and how to correct it.

The mind then starts to focus on the technical parts of the swing and how not to get into any more trouble.

This then leads to a downward spiral that can be intensely emotional.

Whether you are a beginner or an experienced player, golf can tear you apart emotionally if you let it.

The key is to not let this happen. To stop it right in its tracks.

There are two books that I turn to for the mental side of golf that can help with your thoughts and the mind. Zen Golf by Dr. Joseph Parent and Golf is Not the Game of Perfect, by Bob Rotella.

Being able to shake off a bad hole and move forward, as well as being present in the moment and thinking only about the very next shot you need to produce. Versus thinking about the last hole, your score, and the trouble that you were just in or that you want to avoid.

They are wonderful and I have read both, as well as listen to them to get me into the right golfer’s mind before a match.

“Golf is about how well you accept, respond to, and score with your misses much more so than it is a game of your perfect shots.”

– Dr. Bob Rotella

It takes a lot of patience, practice, and playing in pressure situations to master this. Tour professionals spend a lot of time trying to master this mental side of golf. Very hard to accomplish but is achievable. It all starts with being aware of your thoughts and being positive rather than spiraling into a negative place.

Of course, this is easier said than done. When I had my worst round recently, I found myself talking to myself with “just stay positive” and tried to smile through the agony of the round. Trying to stay in a positive mindset.

It was hard.

But if you work at this, it can have a huge impact on your enjoyment of your game that day and afterward.

For the Love of the Game

Golfing with Friends

Try to remember what you love about the game. Why are you really out here playing this great game?

  • To spend time with loved ones and friends?
  • To experience the outdoors and the fresh air?
  • To get some exercise and activity for several hours?
  • To have fun and learn something new?
  • To challenge yourself and see what you are capable of?

All great reasons that I can think of. This can help with thinking of the bigger picture than just a score or a rough day on the course.

Put Away the Ego

Another tactic to use is to put away the ego. The ego really does get in the way.

Golf has a funny way of bringing us back to earth and humbling us. It can be embarrassing to play poorly. Why? Because we are thinking about how others perceive us as golfers.

Yet, if you really think about it, most people are thinking more about their own golf game than how you’re playing.

Be Kinder to Yourself

When others are having a bad golf day, I feel bad for them.

But, I am not thinking to myself, “wow, they are terrible golfers, they should just give it up”.

Can you imagine thinking that way about others? No, because it seems somewhat ludicrous to give anything up after a few bad rounds.

Yet, we think this way inwardly about our own game on a bad day.

If you are feeling this way as many of us do, you must learn how to be kind to yourself.

What would you tell your friend? “hey, you’re just having a bad day or a rough patch. It’ll blow over and soon you’ll be back with your normal great game”.

Right? We would give encouragement. So, we must learn to be that good friend to ourselves and say the same words of encouragement.

Think of Golf as a Journey.

We are so used to wanting things now and getting instant gratification. But golf is something that is not like that. Yes, you may see greatness one day and unfortunately are torn down the next day, week, or month. There are many ups and downs and winding ways to the game.

Golf is A Journey

With so many complexities to golf, look at playing golf as something long-term.

My own 28-year golf journey is still going strong and I am loving it. All the great rounds, horrible rounds, and everything in between. It was never a straight path or the same level of intensity either. It has been fairly sporadic over the years with marriage, kids, life, and everything else along the way.

This game has given me so much in the way of personal development and social connections that have been incredible.

And yet I have so much more that I still want to achieve like getting a hole in one, winning a few tournaments, playing Pebble Beach, and attending the Masters.

I want to continue to learn about the game as there is so much still to pick up, and to keep challenging myself with what I am capable of achieving.

All with the knowledge that there will be lots of ups and downs, good and not so good days.

To experience those highs of the game is what keeps me coming back. And when I have those terrible days, well… I must remember to learn from them and just keep playing so I can continue along on my golf journey.

Review of the Best Women’s Golf Shoes

Ladies’ or women’s golf shoes are probably one of the most overlooked yet important items you will buy when playing golf.

If you are just starting out as a beginner golfer, there is also the option of just wearing sneakers or running shoes which is what I did in the beginning.

As I started to play more golf though, I realized that having a good pair of shoes made specifically for golf, helped keep my feet stable, and provided better traction as well as weather protection in wet conditions than my sneakers.

When I started golfing over 25 years ago, there really was only one type of golf shoe available. Maybe a few different colors but it was pretty much the traditional leather golf shoes with metal spikes.

Like much of the golf industry, the golf shoe market today has exploded and I believe now has a much larger focus on comfort, performance, style, and fashion.

With so many choices now, I thought it would be helpful to provide a golf shoe buying guide to help you navigate purchasing a pair of golf shoes and what to think about when looking at all the different styles and brands out there.

I admit that I love shoes and I love golf and may have purchased and accumulated quite a few pairs over the years. I am happy to talk about the pros and cons as well.

I’ve listed my favorites and top recommended ladies’ golf shoes here. Keep reading or scroll below to find the buying guide for women’s golf shoes.

The List of Best Women’s Golf Shoes

Skechers Golf Shoes

Skechers has been in the shoe business for almost 30 years and is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to comfort and performance.

If you watch golf on TV or read any to the golf magazines, you may have seen Tour players, Matt Kuchar or Brooke Henderson wearing their Skechers Go Golf Shoes.

I love the fact that Skechers has now moved into the golf market as comfort is really so important in our sport especially if you are walking 9 or 18 holes.

Skechers Go Golf Women’s Max Golf Shoe

These Skechers Max Golf Shoes for Women are designed to look and feel like a sneaker or running shoe. They are lightweight, extremely comfortable, and offered in many different colors and styles.

Wide sizes are available, and as with many athletic shoes, it may be smart to go up a 1/2 size. These are spikeless golf shoes, which means they do still have tiny plastic grippers or nubs that provide some traction while golfing.

I own a pair of these Skechers Go Golf Max shoes and have worn them for the last several years. The golf course I play is pretty hilly so I need comfortable and reliable golf shoes that have enough grip and traction and are good for walking 18 holes of golf with my pushcart. These are one of my go-to golf shoes.

My reason for switching to a sneaker-like golf shoe was to help with my Achilles heel issue that I had developed. I needed to find a golf shoe that I could still walk 18 holes and not aggravate the pain on one of my heels. I like the mesh fabric as it is more flexible and not rigid in the back part of the shoe.

The mesh fabric also is extremely breathable in really hot weather, which keeps your feet cooler when the temperatures rise.

The downside to the mesh fabric is that they are not water-resistant or water proof, which means wet feet with even a little amount of wet weather or on dewy mornings.

I have noticed there are a few styles that have a synthetic rubber strip that wraps around the toe area, which might help with keeping the feet dry on those dewy mornings.

A great tip I was given when these golf shoes get dirty is to throw them in the washing machine. I was pleasantly surprised at how well they came out- clean and almost new looking and this was after 2 seasons of wear and tear.

Pros

  • Sneaker-like comfort
  • Price
  • Gripping traction with spikeless golf shoe
  • Fabric mesh is breathable and comfortable
  • Easy to clean
  • Many different color and style options
  • Machine washable

Cons

  • The mesh fabric is not water resistent or waterproof

Skechers Women’s Pivot Golf Shoe

These Skechers Women’s Pivot Golf Shoe are lightweight, comfortable, water-resistant, and are offered in several different style and color combinations.

As with many Skechers shoes, these are made with comfort in mind and use the Goga cushioning technology. Wide sizes are available, however, as with many athletic shoes, it may be smart to go up a 1/2 size.

These are spikeless golf shoes, which actually means there are still tiny plastic spikes or nubs that help grip the ground when hitting your golf shots.

Made with a synthetic material, they wipe clean and are water-resistant on dewy mornings.

Pros

  • Price
  • Comfort and GOGA Max Cushioning
  • Water-Resistant
  • Wipes Clean
  • Spikeless
  • Odor inhibitor, wicking moisture away, long lasting

Cons

  • Plastic grippers can get a little slippery on hard surfaces.
  • Water resistant, but no waterproof guarantee

ECCO Biom Hybrid Women’s Golf Shoe

This ECCO Biom Hybrid Women’s Golf Shoe is another favorite and is ultra-comfortable. The Ecco brand is a Danish company founded in 1963 and is known for its high-quality soft leather walking shoes around the world. They are also known for their innovation in footwear. In golf, to ensure a proven spikeless technology, they tested 2500 athletes to make sure that the shoe would perform to the highest level.

The 4 dots on the shoe symbolize “quality, comfort, technology, and style”. These ladies Ecco golf shoes provide amazing comfort for the golfer who needs a comfortable walking shoe as well as weather protection on wet rainy days or wet conditions on the golf course.

I wore these for at least 5 years and they were a favorite. Extremely comfortable, waterproof and I loved the soft leather which for me didn’t need to be broken in.

Pros

  • High-quality shoe and brand
  • Waterproof with Hydromax technology
  • Extremely comfortable for walking 9 or 18 holes
  • Soft, breathable high-quality leather
  • Spikeless
  • Comes in multiple different color choices

Cons

  • Price

Adidas Crossknit Women’s Golf Shoes

I really am starting to like the Adidas Golf brand. I feel like they are designing some great apparel and shoes that seem to fit women.

The Adidas Crossknit Women’s Golf Shoes are lightweight, flexible, and extremely solid feeling when walking the golf course and playing a round. They provide light to moderate arch support and are designed with a patented Boost foam technology that provides energized cushioning.

These particular Adidas shoes for golf are made with the mesh fabric that a lot of running type golf shoes are now made with, making them quite flexible and breathable. It has a synthetic strip on the toe area that helps keep dew from getting your feet wet. They are good for a nice sunny day however, they are not waterproof for muddy, wet or rainy conditions. I was concerned when I wore these on dewy mornings, but I wore them all last season with no issues with soggy feet.

One other note is that if you walk a lot, these were great for all the hills and terrain at my home course. I usually like loose-fitting golf shoes, but these provide my feet with a little extra support and coverage needed especially when walking some of the uneven terrains.

Just be careful when ordering as I went up a full size bigger and these shoes tend to run a bit on the narrow side.

Pros

  • Come in a choice of various colors.
  • Light arch support
  • Lightweight cloudfoam provides great cushioning
  • Spikeless golf shoes with small extra treads for grips
  • Mesh provides flexibility and breathability
  • Lateral stability through the golf swing

Cons

  • A snug fit that runs a bit narrow. Best to order 1/2 – 1 full size up.
  • A slip-on sneaker, tongue is attached.
  • Mesh fabric – not water-resistant or waterproof.

Adidas Adipure Women’s Golf Shoes

These Adidas Adipure Women’s Golf Shoes are a great all around golf shoe. They provide “cushioning, comfort, stability for maximum golf performance”.

The cushioning technology allows for amazing comfort while walking 9 or 18 holes of golf.

A friend of mine owns a pair of these and she mentioned that she likes how light and comfortable they are and that they keep her feet dry during some wetter conditions on the course.

Pros

  • Price
  • Comfortable for walking 9 or 18 holes
  • Spikeless
  • Microfiber leather and climastorm water resistant protection

Cons

  • None

FootJoy Boa Women’s Golf Shoes

I can not have a list of best women’s golf shoes without including FootJoy, a long-standing premier maker of golf shoes. They have been making shoes since 1857, and focus on “craftmanship, technology, style, fit and function”.

These FootJoy Boa Women’s Golf Shoes provide midfoot stability, enhanced traction, and comfort. If you are looking for enhanced, top-of-the-line traction and gripping performance in your golf swing, the Footjoy DryJoys use SoftSpike cleat technology.

Made with a full grain leather, they also come with a 2-year waterproof guarantee.

The ladies DryJoy golf shoes do not have laces to tie. Instead it uses BOA technology to help tighten the laces for a more custom fit for your feet.

In the beginning, they may feel a bit stiff as they are made of high-quality durable leather and may take time wearing in.

Footjoy Dryjoys were my first ever pair of golf shoes and once worn in, they lasted for many many years, keeping my feet nice and dry in all weather conditions.

Pros

  • High-quality full grain leather golf shoe
  • Great traction with Softspike cleats during your golf swing
  • 2 year waterproof guarantee
  • Long lasting golf shoe

Cons

  • Price
  • A little stiff and tight, may take time to wear in

Overall Recommendation

It is really hard to pick one shoe over another as we as individuals are different especially when it comes to our feet. Having said that, if I were to choose the best women’s golf shoe overall from this list, I’d pick the ECCO Biom Hybrid Women’s Golf Shoe.

I just love this golf shoe for their supreme comfort and that they keep feet dry and protected, and will last many years. It is also the golf shoe that I see others playing in the most on the golf course – so a very popular golf shoe.

Women’s Golf Shoe Buying Guide.

These are some areas and points to consider when buying a pair of shoes for golf.

1. Comfort

Think about whether you will be walking a flat golf course, a hilly golf course or riding in a golf cart mostly.

If you are walking a golf course, especially if it is a long or hilly course, finding the right golf shoes is so very important. In this case, you will want to find golf shoes that are pretty much made for walking and are super comfortable. The last thing you want is to be uncomfortable for 4-5 hours or in agony.

However, if you will mostly be riding in a cart, then you won’t be walking as much. Which means you can look at other options of golf shoes.

2. Weather Protection

Do you need water resistant or waterproof shoes?

Water resistant golf shoes will keep your feet fairly dry in dewy grass and some wetness on the course.

Be careful of the mesh sneaker-style golf shoes as they may not be very weather protective since they are made of fabric and not leather/synthetic leather. However, some of the new fabrics out there are increasingly using water resistant technologies that are pretty amazing.

Having a rubber or synthetic strip along the toe may help with morning dew and smaller amounts of water on the course.

Waterproof golf shoes will keep your feet dry in rainy and wetter conditions. There are golf shoes that come with a 1 or 2-year waterproof guarantee with your purchase so if this is something that is really important to you, it may be worthwhile looking into.

3. Budget and Price

The many different options of golf shoes on the market today, comes with every price range as well.

As with fashion and apparel in any industry, you can find practically anything you need at the right price. A high-quality shoe at a higher price may last many years and provide everything you need.

A lower-priced golf shoe that provides the comfort you need may not last as many years, but since it was priced lower, you can purchase another pair or even several pairs in different colors for a fraction of the higher-priced shoes.

4. Fashion and Style

Biion Women's Golf Shoes

These Biion Footwear Women’s Golf Shoes seem to be all the rage this year. I like to think of them as Crocs meets golf shoes. They are so fun, and I always get tons of compliments and questions about them. Some people don’t wear socks with them, but I like to wear little footie socks. These are great to wear especially if you will be out for a casual round of golf and riding in a cart. And they have tons of different patterns, styles and colors!

For a 20% discount on your whole order, be sure to use code LYNNCOTTER at checkout.

I golfed with a woman in a local charity tournament and she had the cutest little golf flats or golf moccasins. I asked if they were golf shoes and she told me they were and that she only wears them when she doesn’t have to walk the hilly course like the one we were playing. I found them online here and they are so cute! Marc Joseph Moccasin Golf Shoes

What is so great is you can find so many fun and unique fashionable ladies’ shoes that are also golf shoes. Just like with women’s golf clothes and apparel, there are many more options available than ever before. Golf brands are finally becoming much more creative and fun.

Last year, I could not stop thinking about these particular Gfore golf shoes that I saw in our Pro Shop and ended up splurging on them (used some of my tournament and league winnings).

Women's Golf Shoes

They are a name brand and yes, they are fashionable and stylish golf shoes. I only wear them when I am riding in a cart, or playing in fun golf events and charity tournaments.

But, they look great and I love the fashion statement these golf shoes make. I think my pair was a past year’s model, but here is a link to a cute pair of gFore Gallivanter Women’s Golf Shoes in silver, which are also really unique and stylish.

5. Foot Issues

If you have foot issues, it is extremely important to find the right shoes since you will be wearing them for 4-5 hours and possibly walking.

My feet were fine until I developed an Achilles heel issue – mostly in one particular foot. So, now I need to wear golfing shoes that help alleviate that pain and that I can still walk and golf in for 18 holes.

Luckily I found a few different brands that meet my needs. From research and talking to others, I found that having a mesh or fabric backing was the key.

My husband, on the other hand, has high arches and a bit of plantar fasciitis, so he needs golf shoes that help support his arches and has used inserts as well.

6. Spikes versus Spikeless

The metal spikes that I grew up playing with were crazy strong and could ruin hardwood floors in clubhouses and golf course greens.

These were officially banned by golf courses around the late 1990’s due mostly to damage to the greens. There are some Tour golfers that still play in metal spikes most likely because of the traction and groundedness they provide.

Spikeless golf shoes aren’t flat and smooth. They usually come with some of kind of small plastic grippers or nubs that will help you grip the ground, but they won’t provide as much traction as actual plastic soft spikes.

The new plastic soft spikes are a cross between the old metal spikes and spikeless golf shoes soles. Maybe you need more traction for walking up and down slippery fairways and terrain or need extra traction in your golf swing. These soft spikes provide just that for the recreational golfer or amateur player.

7. Leather, Synthetic Leather and Mesh or Fabric

I have many golf friends who have been golfing for years. Their go-to is the traditional leather golf shoe and they love them. These have been around since the early 1900s. They are high quality with genuine leather, are usually waterproof, and will stand the test of time. The only downside with the hard leather is that they tend to be stiff and inflexible and need some time to wear in. But people still love them.

The mesh and fabric-covered shoes provide a soft and flexible golf shoe that provides some serious comfort on the golf course. But, the downside is that they typically lack in weather protection and keeping your feet fully dry on wet rainy days.

Think about the temperatures outside as well. Leather or synthetic leather shoes may not be as breathable in hot weather. Whereas a mesh or fabric-covered shoe may be better at keeping your feet cooler. Yet, on a colder raw day in the Fall or Winter, it might be better to have the leather shoes to keep your feet warmer.

New softer leathers, synthetic leather and materials are being developed with new technologies every year, which is really exciting. Shoe manufacturers and designers are coming out with golf shoes that combine all these different characteristics and needs from weather protection, comfort, style, and overall performance.

Good Luck Shoe Shopping!

Golf Dress Code for Women and Ladies Playing Golf

Knowing the proper golf attire is very important in the game of golf. Golf has been around for centuries and it has been known to follow its traditional ways.

The good thing is, men and women’s dress codes on the golf course have changed over the centuries and even decades.

Think men in knickers and a sports jacket and women in long skirts and heels. Well, thankfully times have changed and women can wear much-improved performance wear that allows us to move.

Ladies Golf Attire in the Past

Vintage Golf Fashion

It’s very stylish in a vintage sort of way, but I can’t imagine having to swing a golf club, carry golf clubs and walk a golf course in 80 or 90-degree weather in this outfit above from the early 1900’s.

Through the years, though golf fashion and styles have changed, there are still dress codes and traditions that golfers follow. Women’s golf fashion and style are captured in this article – an interesting look at how it has changed over the last 70 years.

Ladies Golf Attire Today – More Comfortable & Colorful

Many of us look at what the professional golfers are wearing during their televised tournaments, which have a large impact on what female golfers may wear on the golf course.

Golf options and styles are becoming trendier and more stylish.

Finally!

What Are You Allowed to Wear When Golfing?

Acceptable Ladies Golf Attire

Women seem to be able to have a lot more options than their male counterparts as far as golf attire on the golf course. Women can wear shorts, skorts, skirts, and pants. Most of the acceptableness is whether they are modest enough by having enough coverage. However, a lot more leniency is seen nowadays as golf is growing.

Golf Shorts Allowed on the Golf Course

Shorts Are Acceptable on the Golf Course

Golf shorts are part of the dress code for women. Though the men in professional golf all wear pants, women on the LPGA Tour and other Tours are allowed to wear shorts and skirts as well as pants. And for amateurs or recreational golfers, golf dress codes also include these items as well.

If a golf course has a dress code for shorts, I have typically seen it state that shorts can not be shorter than so many inches above the knee. How short and whether they enforce it is up to the golf course. Honestly, I haven’t really seen it enforced too much. I think the important thing to keep in mind on most golf courses is that the shorts are respectable and offer enough coverage.

Here are a few examples of what can be worn. These white golf shorts are very popular with recreational golfers and are very comfortable especially for golf. The blue Adidas golf shorts offer a little more coverage and length.

Golf Skirts or Golf Skorts Allowed on the Golf Course

Golf skirts today are pretty much golf skorts. These are skirts with shorts built into them underneath. These can be a lot of fun to wear and are often quite comfortable. The new materials are able to keep you cool and dry. There are many different lengths of golf skirts. The most popular are usually between 14″ – 20″ My personal favorite is 16″ or 17″ as it is comfortable and I can wear these skirts around town other than golf.

The white golf skirt below is 17″ in length. The black and white paisley skirt is 20″. Interestingly, the pink golf skirt says 14.5″ but I didn’t feel it was too short for me (I like to have some coverage). In fact it was very flattering and one of my favorite golf skirts.

Golf Pants Allowed on The Golf Course

Any length pant is allowed in golf. These golf pants here are representative of what you might see out golfing.

Because golf is played outdoors in the elements, capris and ankle length pants are popular as the hem doesn’t get too mucky. Dress codes in golf usually restrict jeans or any kind of denim. I have also seen cargo pants and sweatpants on the list at some private courses.

What Golf Tops Are Allowed in Golf?

Traditionally, acceptable golf tops have been all about having a collar. Collared golf shirts used to be the requirement. Pictured to your right would be your typical short sleeve collared golf shirt.

However I am seeing a change in the dress codes for women in the area of golf tops. First, mock collars are now being designed for golf. As seen on Tiger Woods and Michelle Wie West.

And long sleeve shirts don’t always need to have a collar, but many still do. However, if you are wearing a sleeveless golf shirt, this is where golf courses get stricter and typically require a collar.

Are Golf Dresses Allowed on the Golf Course?

Yes, golf dresses are allowed and acceptable golf attire. In fact, golf dresses are becoming more popular the last few years. Many dresses are made using comfortable fabrics specifically for golf with pockets and such where you can place balls and tees. And the majority come with shorts that you can wear underneath.

Here are two fashionable golf dresses from Fore-Ladies Golf, which is an online ladies golf store that has hundreds of golf styles and fashion. (Use Code LYNN for 10% off any order)

What Kind of Shoes Should I Wear To Golf?

Wearing golf specific shoes is not a requirement.

The dress code for golf shoes usually includes a statement about no wearing metal spikes and no flip flops. Though I don’t remember seeing a specific dress code on high heels, they would not be very comfortable playing golf – LOL.

I wouldn’t worry about metal spikes as I’m not even sure they still sell them. These used to be the standard for all golf shoes, but metal spikes caused a lot of damage to both golf courses and clubhouses.

Golf shoes today come in all different styles and looks.

Many look just like walking shoes, tennis shoes, or sneakers, which is a huge improvement since golfers tend to do a lot of walking during their round.

Women’s golf shoes come with soft spikes or are spikeless, both of which are made plastic. Spikeless do have a small tread or these little nubs that provide a little grip. Soft spikes provide much more traction than a spikeless golf shoe. And some golfers use the soft spikes to help produce more power in their golf swing.

My Buying Guide and post on Best Women’s Golf Shoes provides much more detail on ladies golf shoes and whether you are looking for comfort, weatherproof, or style.

Golf Hats

The only dress code requirement I have seen about hats is that you need to wear baseball caps forward and not backward.

The majority of golfers wear some kind of hat, mostly due to the sun. The standard look today is the baseball-style golf cap.

Sun Visors are still very popular because they don’t mush your hair down and can slide right on.

I like to wear baseball caps, but also tend to wear a sun hat with a wider brim for more sun protection.

My Buying Guide on Best Women’s Golf Hats for Sun Protection provides many different styles.

Golf Gloves

Most golfers wear 1 golf glove on their non-dominant hand.Golf gloves are worn to help produce a better grip. They are not required but the majority of golfers wear them.

Dress Codes & Golf Attire for Rain, Wind & Cold

When inclement weather hits, you want to be prepared. That means most things are good to wear to protect you. I pack a pair of rain pants in my golf bag when it looks like heavy rain.

Just make sure anything you wear doesn’t constrict you in any way with your golf swing and allows you to move.

  • Golfers usually wear golf-specific windshirts that block the wind. Waterproof rain jackets that are lightweight are essential for rainy days out on the course.
  • Dressing for golf in colder temperatures on cooler fall or spring days – sweaters, vests, lightweight jackets are great. Layering is the key.
  • Dressing for golf in the winter – anything goes to keep you warm. Dress codes are usually not enforced here since you are bundled up and typically it is during the offseason.

What Attire Is Not Allowed While Golfing?

If a golf course or club enforces a dress code. It typically does not allow denim or jeans, cargo shorts, yoga or athletic leggings, tank tops, tee shirts, cropped tops or midriffs, and flip flops. And I have heard of a few golf clubs restrict the length of a skirt or dress.

It is always best to be prepared.

Call the golf course or pro shop ahead of time and find out if you have questions or concerns with a particular outfit.

How Often Is a Dress Code Enforced At a Golf Course?

Because of golf’s traditional roots, some golf courses still enforce a dress code for both men and women.

Some golf facilities are a bit more lenient depending on where you play.

The most lenient and casual places are likely practice facilities, golf entertainment spots like TopGolf and indoor simulators, and smaller municipal or public golf courses.

Private clubs, famous well known and exclusive golf courses tend to be the strictest and enforce a dress code while playing golf and in the clubhouse.

In Closing – Proper Golf Attire for Women

What you can or can’t wear is important to know ahead of time especially if you are a beginner in golf. Being prepared can give you a boost in confidence before, during and after your round.

The 7 Wood Was A Game Changer For My Golf Game

Consider Adding a 7 Wood

Let me tell you how I discovered the amazing 7 wood and what it did to help my golf game.

I was given a used set of golf clubs from my mother-in-law probably about 10 years ago now. I was excited because they were made by a well-known brand and were in great condition.

The bag consisted of the normal driver, irons, wedges, and 4 different fairway woods. Including a 7 and 9 wood, which I took out of the bag because I didn’t think I had any use for them.

At the time, I was used to hitting irons and a 3 & 5 wood. I had no idea what these extra woods were used for.

One day during a round, I watched as my playing partner made this high arcing shot out of some pretty thick rough…with what looked to be a fairway wood. I asked what club they just used. The response was a 7 wood. A what?

Hmmm, I remembered that I had one sitting in my garage never touched.

When I got home, I brought it out. And guess what? I haven’t parted with it since.

I started using this 7 wood golf club and my game and handicap improved immensely that summer. I found it so easy to hit, so effortless. And unlike the 3 wood, it sent my ball high with tons of loft.

I also could use it out of the thick rough.

In fact, I used it everywhere. In the rough. In the fairways. Off the tee. And because I was using the 7 wood so much, my confidence soared as well.

What Exactly is a 7 Wood?

A 7 wood is a fairway wood that was originally made for recreational golfers with slower swing speeds such as women and senior golfers. These days, however, we are seeing all types of golfers using the trusty 7 wood.

The 7 wood is technically a fairway wood. The clubhead has the weight and size of a fairway wood and is bigger than a hybrid clubhead. The shaft is longer than a 7 hybrid and 7 iron. It provides an amazing amount of loft and distance and golfers are finding it is comfortable to hit. If you have fairway woods, the 7 wood follows the 5 wood in gapping or distance.

Why You Should Consider Using a 7 Wood

With all the new technology in golf, manufacturers and brands are designing the 7 wood for all golfers – not just golfers with slower swing speeds.

They have tweaked and adjusted them so much that they can add a lot of loft and accuracy to any shot. Fairway woods are typically used for the purpose of distance, and are not as accurate as irons. However, the 7 wood can provide the needed distance and because of the height of the shot and the spin, it can provide more accuracy.

Do Tour Professionals use a 7 wood?

Yes, pros on tour have recently been known to carry a 7 wood in their golf bags. To name a few, Dustin Johnson, Bubba Watson, Max Homa are just a few of the bigger names on the PGA Tour.

And as for the female pros on tour, LPGA players Nelly Korda, Jessica Korda, Leona Maguire, Lizette Salas, and Michelle Wie West have also been seen carrying the 7 wood in their bag. Wie West also has been known to carry a hard-to-find 11 wood.

What is the 7 wood loft and what degree is it?

A 7 wood is typically set between 20 – 23 degrees. I have seen a few women’s 7 woods as high as 27 degrees.

The higher the degree or loft, the higher the ball is designed to travel in the air. For me personally, I love a higher degree of loft as I find them easier to hit and often will get a nice high golf shot. This is especially important especially if you have any elevated greens where a golf ball needs to land high and soft.

What is a 7 wood distance?

The distance of a 7 wood will be comparable to a 3 iron. Since I find low irons really hard to hit and don’t carry them, my 7 wood is comparable to a 4 hybrid.

The average distance for the LPGA player is 175 yards. I probably get between 140 – 150 yards with my 7 wood.

7 wood vs Hybrid

I love my hybrids. I first started using the 7 wood before discovering my current hybrids. I would carry a 4 hybrid, but I find the 7 wood easier to hit. Maybe due to the larger clubhead. I can also get out of the rough better with the 7 wood than with a 4 hybrid.

The 7 wood is a great club to have that fills the gap between my 5 hybrid and the 5 wood.

7 wood vs 5 wood

The 7 wood compliments the 5 wood. My 7 wood travels 10 yards shorter than the 5 wood and is easier to hit and provides me more loft. A 5 wood has an average loft of 18 degrees whereas a 7 wood is around 21 degrees.

Best Women’s 7 Wood Golf Clubs

I have listed a few 7 woods below as well as what is called the Heavenwood, which is made by Callaway. I have many golfing friends that just love this Heavenwood golf club. They are technically not a 7 wood, but it has a similar club head loft (20 degrees vs 22 degrees) and the slightly longer shaft length can provide more distance than a 7 wood.

Women’s Golf Day Movement

What started as a way to get more women and girls to learn and play golf, Women’s Golf Day has continued to gain momentum over the last five years. By using popular platforms like Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook, Women’s Golf Day has created a buzz through the social media golf world to help grow the game.

What is alluring is the mission itself.

To celebrate women and girls playing and learning the game of golf.

Women’s Participation in Golf

When I first started playing golf in the early 1990s, there really weren’t that many other women that I knew of that played. I usually was the only female at the driving range and ended up joining my boyfriend and his friends in a foursome.

While I grew up with two brothers, being the only girl amongst the boys was something I was used to.

It didn’t bother me too much to always have to play golf with the boys.

However, as I have gotten older I realize that many of my friends would like to play but it is hard to find the time and can be a complex game to learn. And it can be very intimidating especially to be the only female amongst the men.

Having other women for support is really important in keeping with the game.

Almost three decades later, my passion for golf has driven me to help grow the game. Blogging and using social media like Instagram, Facebook and Pinterest have been a great way to help me on this mission.

Along the way, I have discovered other women like me who are also trying to help female golfers and increase female participation in golf.

I was really excited to see the Women’s Golf Day event, as it is something that any of us can join and get on board with to help foster the game. It also unites us all to come together to celebrate women and girls playing the game of golf.

What Is Women’s Golf Day?

The Founder, Elisa Gaudet, had been working in the golf industry for quite some time and wanted to provide more opportunities to anyone who wanted to get into the game, specifically women and girls.

A global golf day dedicated to this group was created. And now five years later the movement and initiative have grown like wildfire across social media and within the golfing world.

She and her team have had great success in building the campaign and have made it easy for influencers and passionate golfers like me to get on board and help grow the initiative and participate in the celebration and fun.

Things like wearing the signature colors of red and white, having it as a one-day event, and expanding it globally to other countries around the world have all contributed to its overwhelming success.

Strong List of Supporters

With strong supporters like the Footjoy, Titleist, TopGolf, the Golf Channel, and the PGA Tour Superstore, it is great that the top businesses in the golf industry are showing such strong support.

I loved seeing the display at my local PGA Tour Superstore highlighting Women’s Golf Day. As a supporter and participating facility, they hosted a Women’s Golf Day event in their stores across the country with golf instruction, clinics, and free giveaways.

While my club did not have a Women’s Golf Day celebration or tournament, this year’s date happened to fall on our Invite a Friend golf tournament. My golf gals and I showed our support by wearing Women’s Golf Day red and white for the tournament.

Women's Golf Day - Women & Golf Celebration

As a bonus, we won first place. But more importantly, I loved that we could wear our red and white colors to show support for a great mission. Women’s Golf Day is all about women and girls coming together to play this great game.

When Is Women’s Golf Day

Women’s Golf Day is usually celebrated the first Tuesday in June of each year. They have also added a virtual day which was celebrated this past September.

WGD Palooza

WGD Palooza took place recently and included an introduction with Jack and Barbara Nicklaus as well as interviews and tips from Annika Sorenstam and other industry leaders from the golfing world.

Expanding Globally

With a dedicated team that supports its efforts across the golf industry, Women’s Golf Day has been able to expand globally. They are now operating in 900 locations in 68 countries all over the world.

Women’s Golf Day on Social Media

All you need to do to look for Women’s Golf Day is to type in the hashtag #womensgolfday or the profile @womensgolfday. The movement has reached almost 40 million people around the globe. It is inspiring to see so many posts celebrating this great day.

Love all the inspiring photos of women and girls enjoying their time together playing and learning golf.

Golf Club Fitting Review – Learn What Is Involved

When I first started golfing in the mid-1990s, getting fitted for clubs was not what it is today. I don’t think I started to hear the term “club fitting” until the last decade. A custom fitting for golf clubs is now a very personalized experience becoming more popular even with amateurs and recreational golfers, not just the pros.

This year, I was in the market for a new set of golf clubs and thought it would be a good idea to get a custom fitting with a professional club fitter.

Just so you know my background or my perspective, I have been playing for over 25 years. These days I golf for fun socially as well as in a few competitive leagues at my club and in my region.  I am a mid handicapper, am constantly trying to improve my golf game, and may start to play in golf tournaments around my state.

One area that I hadn’t really focused on yet were the golf clubs in my bag, and I know I needed to given all the new technology.

My bag was comprised of a very mixed set of clubs that I had picked up over the years.

Swapping Out Old Clubs With New

Anything that I liked, went in the bag.  Anything I didn’t, went out.  The current bag included everything from a Callaway driver, Cobra fairway woods, Callaway and Cobra hybrids, Nike irons, and wedges from Nike, Titleist, and Cleveland.

I knew these clubs very well and became very comfortable and attached to them over the years. I have not wanted to part ways because of this.

However, it was time for an upgrade.

I just needed to find the right clubs that would still feel comfortable and enhance my game.

Finding a Club Fitter

After doing a little research and asking around, I found a Master Club Fitter in my area. Jonathan Almeida, Director of Club Fitting with Harmon Golf in Rockland, MA. Harmon Golf is a facility that is well known for its high level focus on golf instruction and training.

Besides being an expert in his field and having years of experience fitting clubs for golfers, Jonathan has the distinction of being listed as a Golf Digest Top 100 Best Clubfitter in America.

To get the best fitting possible, I wanted to do this the right way and go with a highly regarded club fitter.

Scheduling The Club Fitting

Club Fitting Experience

Upon calling the facility, they inquired as to which clubs I was looking to replace. Was I looking at a specific club, a half bag or full bag?

I was looking for a full bag replacement but was open to keeping any clubs that were still in good shape and working well. I actually made it a point that I would keep a very open mind and not mention any of my biases with one club or brand.

For a full bag fitting, I was told it may take a good 2 hours. However, instead of scheduling a 2-hour session right away, they suggested it was best to start with a 1-hour session first and see where things were afterward.

Of course, my initial thought was “why not just schedule the full fitting in one session?”. It seemed strange they would want me to come back for multiple sessions instead of doing the whole fitting in one take.

Apparently, hitting balls over and over again in a club fitting can get tiring after an hour or so.

Note: They were right. When you schedule your club fitting, anything over 1 – 1.5 hours can get pretty tiring. The main reason is that you want to be fresh during the fitting. After about an hour and twenty minutes, my shots became sloppier and a bit erratic. I knew it was time to call it a day.

Golf Club Fitting Cost

The cost of a fitting will vary based on where you live. Some charge based on the session, some charge based on the number of clubs you’re looking to replace, and some charge by the hour. If you visit a golf store, many of these offer free fittings where you can test out clubs and get a fitting from one of reps. Fittings definitely vary widely depending on what you are looking for.

Golf Club Fitting Process

For the club fitting, I brought in my current set of golf clubs so they could assess what I was using. It was December and I was curious where we would be performing the fitting. I assumed it would be on an indoor simulator. But actually, it was in a largely enclosed room with 3 walls and open to the outside practice range (what they call “open-air”). With the heaters on, I was very comfortable without a coat.

Assessment

We first did an assessment on what my goals were for the fitting as well as my golf game and whether I had any issues or concerns.

Personally, my goal was to pick up some distance and improve accuracy with new clubs.

After this, we talked about my current set of clubs and then started a light warm up with a few comfortable short irons.

Driver Fitting

We started with the driver. And that’s when it got really fun. He had me hit some shots with my current driver and then gave me many different drivers and variations. He was switching out and changing different brands of clubheads, shaft lengths, shaft flexes, weights, shaft angles, grips, and loft. I was surprised at all the different variables and options that can be customized in a fitting.

Club Fitters at Harmon Golf

Interesting too was that though I liked the feel of a heavier club head, it actually didn’t make my drives any longer based on the weight.

We talked a lot about driver loft.  The loft on my current driver was fairly high and I always wondered if it was too high.  Factor in even more loft because when I set up to the driver, I lean to the right so that I am hitting up on the ball.

I had read that a higher loft was easier to hit and good for creating more distance for slower swing speeds.  This is correct to a point, but if your golf balls are going too high, you are losing distance up in the air.  He helped me find the best loft with the right driver to maximize my distance.

I ended up with a driver that was 3.5 degrees lower than my current driver! You have to be careful with this though because you really want more carry in the air versus roll, especially on damp or wet fairways.

Using a Trackman or launch monitor on all my shots, we looked at the spin rate, launch angle, swing speed, apex, and many other numbers. I was shown how they all factored in together to find the best clubs customized to my swing.

The best driver for my swing was a senior men’s shaft for flex, a little shorter in length as I am 5’6″ tall. The club shaft felt more solid and a little stiffer than the lighter women’s club.  The woman’s shaft was a little too light for my swing speed and had to catch up in the transition from the backswing.

Fairway Woods Fitting

I was excited to test out fairway woods. The Cobras I had were from the early 2000’s, which meant that yes, they were almost 20 years old. I loved them because I was comfortable hitting them and didn’t want to change for fear of not being able to hit them well, especially the 3 wood.

We talked a lot about the 3 wood and the purpose it will serve me. Too funny because as some of you also may experience, this club is my hardest club to hit consistently. Sometimes it’s good, many times not so good. But when it’s good, it gives me that added distance I need.

I tried out many different options. Again tweaking and changing out shaft flexes, club heads, and varying degrees of loft. After several different clubs, I connected extremely well and consistently with one particular 3 wood. It felt great hitting it and low and behold, I was able to get it up in the air with an amazing amount of loft and distance.

I fell in love with this club. Of course, I started dreaming of what I could do with it once out on the course…

Ok, getting too far ahead of myself. However, I was happy we found a 3 wood that I could hit well. I had the same result from the 5 wood – same brand.

We stopped the fitting at this point as I was getting tired. After about 1 hour and 15 minutes, my shots were getting sloppy and I wasn’t as fresh as when I started. And when you are looking at stats and numbers and using this to analyze, it was best to stop.

We scheduled the second session to work on irons.

Irons Fitting

The second session of the club fitting focused on irons. Though I carry about the same number of hybrids, we decided to focus on the irons first. I only carry an 8i and 9i, and 3 different wedges.

We tested 5 different iron brands with varying options again.  I ended up with a 7i, 8i, 9i, pitching wedge, and gap wedge. I added the 7 iron because surprisingly, I hit it well and found that it gave me 20 additional yards than my current 7 hybrid.

Yes, I was shocked.   This might be a game changer as I had somewhat given up on using mid irons, instead opting for hybrids. Now, I’ll have to think about whether to add a 6 iron as well and drop the 6 hybrid.

Happy With My New Setup

I am now very happy with my current bag setup. I have 8 new clubs that each give me about 15 – 20 yards more in distance than my previous clubs. I have gone out and played a few times with the new clubs and am still enjoying the distance and feel of these clubs.

I will likely return in a few months to assess my hybrids (6h, 5h, 4h) and check on the gapping that might be missing. Gapping refers to the yardages hit between clubs. In my case, I need to find clubs that cover the gapping between my new 7 iron and 5 wood.

I will look at adding a 6 iron or 6 hybrid and then try out different 5 and 4 hybrids (or keep the ones I currently have).

Takeaways From My Custom Fitting

Here are some great takeaways I liked about this particular club fitting and things to consider when selecting a club fitter.

  • I had many questions and Jonathan was patient in taking the time to answer them all.
  • We tried many different options, changing out anything that might make a difference – varying shafts, weighting, club heads, angles and lofts.
  • There was no bias towards one particular brand.
  • There was no hard sell on anything.
  • We had a very engaging dialogue mostly where he asked me a lot of questions about how I liked the feel, the look, the distance I was getting, the accuracy, and then we would look at the stats together.
  • We used brand new premium ProV1 golf balls to see how I would hit them with the selected clubs. After striking a few balls, I maxed out with a few of my personal bests in distance and accuracy.
  • The hitting area was covered, heated, and in an enclosed room, yet I was hitting out into an open air driving range. Jonathan stressed “the importance of seeing ball flight while getting fit, especially for better players”.
  • All the analysis was done using a high-end Trackman monitor.

I was very happy with my club fitting experience and recommend it for anyone looking to upgrade their clubs and improve their game. There is so much new technology and customization out there that it just makes sense.

Women’s Beginner Golf – Where To Start

Being a beginner in golf as a woman can be hard.    There are many reasons, but the main reason I find is that it can seem very overwhelming and intimidating.

Though the environment is changing, many women did not grow up playing golf and never had early exposure to the game.

So, now you have this opportunity to start playing or your interest has been piqued about this game.

Golf’s Intimidation Factor for Women Learning Golf

Golf can seem intimidating and a bit terrifying for many women, mostly because we feel like we need to act and perform the right way, almost perfectly on the golf course.

Many of us are afraid of embarrassing ourselves as beginners.

Am I right?

The golf advice I heard when I was starting out was that I should just relax and have fun.

Yes this is true, but with golf’s many rules and etiquette, it is important to also know a little about what is proper behavior on the golf course.

Many times, it is for safety, especially in the beginner.    Yes, you don’t want to be in the way of swinging clubs and hard-hit balls!

Starting Your Golf Journey

First of all, let me congratulate you in that you are starting what I like to call your own personal “golf journey”.  We all are on one if we play.

Learning the game of golf will be filled with ups and downs, challenges and lots of rewards.

If it didn’t have the rewards, none of us would still be playing.    Golf is really such an amazing game.

So, I think it is wonderful that you are here and am very excited for you!

How To Start Playing Golf

So, now that you want to learn, where do you start?

I thought it would first make sense to provide a few easy big picture steps to follow.

While there are many aspects to the game of golf, it can be done one step at a time as long as you make the decision to commit, practice, and play.

In simple terms, golf sounds easy.  Hit a little compact ball into a hole hundreds of yards away using a golf club.  Doesn’t sound so hard, does it?

The hardest part about golf for beginners is learning how to hit the golf ball and understanding the rules and etiquette of the game. Honestly, once you learn the basics of these and find the right individuals or groups to play with, you can play and it will lead to much enjoyment!

Beginner Golf For Women – Follow These 7 Steps

Golf For Beginners How to Get Started

1.  Borrow Clubs or Buy a Beginner Golf Club Set

As someone new to golf, you can borrow clubs or buy a golf club set.  These golf sets are affordable and come with all the basic clubs you will need.  Read my buying guide on how to purchase a golf club set for beginners.

All you need for now is a driver, a wood or hybrid, a few irons, a wedge, and a putter. I used my grandmother’s golf clubs when I first started out.

They were old but good quality and worked just fine.  It is ok to borrow clubs in the beginning if you know someone. Often times, a teaching instructor or clinics you attend will have extra clubs that you can use.

As you improve and start playing more, you can purchase a set of your own. Each year, manufacturers come out with the newest technology and equipment with plenty to choose from.

2.  Learn How to Swing The Golf Club

Learning the fundamentals of the golf swing and how to hit a golf ball is hard but also can be a lot of fun.  I mean what is golf without swinging the club, right?

Learning a good foundation is also important.  Read my post on Basic Golf Swing Fundamentals for Women.

The best thing they say to do is to take lessons from a golf professional who specializes in teaching the mechanics of the proper golf swing.

Beginner Golf Lesson

Most people swear by a teaching golf professional who can instruct and give you a good base of skills and techniques to learn from.  Here is a list of LPGA and PGA professionals that can help you learn the golf swing.

However, full disclosure here.  I actually learned how to swing the golf club and learned the game from my Dad as an adult.  He was a really good teacher and I learned a ton from him.  In fact, it was 7 years later when I actually took my first lesson from a professional.   So, everyone is different.  As long as you have someone who can teach you and show you in the beginning, it will be  really helpful.

Another great way to learn is to find a group class or clinic.  You can find these offered at your local golf courses or practice facilities as well as with women’s golf organizations that have local chapters, possibly in your area.

These are so much fun because they are informal, low key and you can learn with others who are also just starting out.  Best thing is it’s social!

3.  Be Consistent About Your Lessons & Practice in Between.

Do not just get one lesson or attend one clinic and be on your way. Learning the golf swing is not the most natural movement and is hard to learn in one 30 minute or hour lesson.  There are also different swings for different clubs!

Consistency for Beginner Golf

Participating in at least a 6 week time frame is good to start with. After each lesson be sure to practice what was taught so you can help your muscle memory.  Doing this will ensure improvement over time and will maximize your lessons.

4.  Learn the Very Basics, Terminology, and How the Game is Played.

You don’t need to know a lot when you are first learning how to hit the golf ball.  Very rarely will you be heading out on the golf course for the very first time without ever hitting a club.  However, after you have taken some lessons, hit balls at the driving range you may go out and play a bit on a golf course.

If you do, this is when you will need to know some of the terms and etiquette of golf.  Here is a post on Basic Golf Terms for Beginners that I put together that can help as you are just starting out.

You can also learn them as you play with your partner if he or she is more experienced and is willing to do so.

This is how most of us learned how to play golf.  Someone showed us the ropes and helped us learn the game.

5.  Find a Partner, Friend, Parent, Grandparent, or Social Group to Play With.

This is probably the most important part and many times it can be a challenge. You must try to find someone to play with. When asked, most golfers are usually up for playing.

Golf is the kind of sport and activity that anyone can play together no matter their level of skill

Essentially you are playing against the golf course and your main objective, in the beginning, is to learn the game and how to hit the golf ball.

As you become a more experienced player, there are many ways to make golf fun or competitive and you can play against an opponent.

I was fortunate that I met my future husband right after I learned the game. He loved to golf and was all about taking me out to play. I believe it was the main reason I am still playing today.

I had a golfing partner from the beginning who was patient and fun to play with!

If you don’t have someone to play with, check with your local golf courses, practice facilities and women’s groups.  They may have social groups that go out on a regular basis. If you took a clinic, check with the other participants who might want to play as you’ll be at the same level.

6.  Play on a Golf Course.

Now that you have committed to learning golf and have some confidence hitting the golf ball, it is time to play on an actual golf course.

It is also a good idea to read up on some of the most important tips on etiquette, which you can find here.  And if you have questions about what to wear or what is appropriate on the on different types of golf courses, you can read my post on What to Wear.

If you have the opportunity to select the type of golf course, there are many to choose from.

Playing 18 holes as a beginner can be extremely overwhelming and I do not recommend it.

Much more enjoyable would be a 9 hole course, an Executive 9 hole course, or even a Par 3 course.

You will find that hitting balls at a driving range is a different experience than playing on a course.

Start from the most forward tees possible or even the family tees if available.  They are closer to the hole and you will enjoy the round more.

Your purpose for playing is to have fun and not worry about score or number of times you hit the golf ball.

My objective, in the beginning, was to learn the game and to hit the ball as well as I could each time. It took me a year or more before I focused on scoring.

7.  Enjoy the Golf Journey and the Process.

When I first started golfing, I was happy to pick up my ball and put it in my pocket when I hit my limit of balls on a given hole. Especially if I felt like I was slowing down the group. It is the surest way to have fun.

When you start out playing, there are so many things going on in your head to remember.

Do not worry so much, take it one step at a time

If you take it too seriously, it can quickly become a very frustrating game.

Learn the rules and etiquette as much as you can, remember to be courteous and respectful, and don’t stress about it too much.

Everyone was a beginner at one time or another and the majority of people I have played with are happy to help you along.

And if you want to stay up to date on the latest posts and articles related to this amazing game, be sure to subscribe here to my newsletter and join our new Facebook Group, Beginner Golf for Women.  I’m hoping this group will provide a community of new golfers that can ask questions and get tips and help they need when first starting out.
