A Weekend Getaway – Golf & Relaxation in the Beautiful Mahoosuc Mountains of Western Maine

If you are looking for a weekend getaway or a golf trip with friends, other couples, or your significant other, don’t forget about the beautiful state of Maine. Golf in Maine can take you along the New England coastline of the Atlantic Ocean or up to the western part of the state and the mountains.

Golf and Travel

My husband and I love to golf. And we love to travel. And because we sometimes can’t get away for too long, we decided to start doing a few overnight and weekend golf trips to places around the New England area during the summer and fall months.

Our most recent summer getaway took us north about 3 hours from Boston, Massachusetts. We had been talking about exploring golf courses and tracks up in New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine.

And because Golf Digest had ranked Sunday River Golf Club #1 as the Best Course in Maine, we decided to check it out. Plus they offer some great options for stay and play golf packages.

Sunday River Resort

Sunday River Golf Logo

Sunday River Golf is located within the Sunday River Resort in Newry, Maine also near the town of Bethel.

The Sunday River Resort is a bustling ski community with downhill and cross country skiing and other winter activities. It is an extremely popular winter destination in the northeast. However, come summertime, it is quiet, peaceful and a nature lovers dream.

Sunday River, like many other mountains and resorts in the area, offers golf and other outdoor activities during the summer.

Sunday River Golf offers an 18 hole championship public course that is relatively new and was designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. It has hosted the Maine Amateur Golf Championship in the past.

The golf course is a challenging track with elevation changes, unique hole designs, layouts, deep ravines, trouble areas, and natural hazards that playing on a mountain course brings.

What we loved and will most likely remember about this course is the majestic mountain views, the serenity, and the nature that surrounds you while playing this beautiful golf course.

A Shorter Golf Season

Jerry Roman, PGA Head Golf Professional at Sunday River, mentioned that in order to accommodate and be prepared for the winter, the Sunday River Golf Club has a hard open and close date. May 11 through October 11 of each year.

If they were soft on these dates, it could be disastrous to the conditions of the course if snowfall or a deep freeze came early or late during any one season.

This mountainous northern region of the country can be difficult for a golf course owner and operator as mother nature can dictate the course conditions from year to year.

A few years ago, a harsh winter had a terrible effect on the greens and it has taken a few years to bring them back to pristine conditions. Since then with much care, maintenance, and good luck from mother nature, the course has bounced back and the greens are playing beautifully.

High Demand Yet Quiet and Peaceful

Because of the demand at Sunday River Golf, the course was booked solid when we played, yet they were able to fit us in with a last-minute change to our tee time due to rainy weather being forecasted for the next day.

Once we headed out on the golf course, I wouldn’t have been able to tell that it was booked solid that day.

Each hole was separated by trees and natural vegetation so you really couldn’t see any other golfers on the course except for the group in front of us from time to time. Occasionally I heard voices echoing from somewhere, yet I couldn’t see any other golfers because of the heavy vegetation, trees, and elevated areas.

Elevation Changes and Mountain Golf

Golf in this part of Maine is mountainous. Elevation changes rise and fall from hole to hole.

There is a 500-foot change in elevation along the course with the 2nd hole being the lowest and the 17th hole the highest.

Sunday River Golf Club Hole 2 Freefall
“Freefall” hole #2 par 4. Elevation changes from hole to hole and tee to green at Sunday River.

Designing and building a golf course in the mountains, Sunday River has made use of the natural landscape, vegetation, ravines, valleys, and elevations to provide a beautiful backdrop and course that is unique and interesting to play.

Sunday River Golf Club 10th Hole

I loved the bunkering along the course as well as the use of the natural waste areas guarding and protecting the greens.

Suday River Golf Club Hole 14 Runout
Hole #14 par 3 “Runout”. Natural waste areas guarding the green.

Course architects designed a course that makes you think about risk and reward for each hole.

Golf Course Conditions At Sunday River

As a public golf course open to anyone, you never know what the course conditions might be like. I like to pay attention to how well the tee boxes, fairways and greens are maintained.

The golf course here at Sunday River was impressive. The golf course and greens were in beautiful condition.

We were surprised to hear that only a year or two ago, the course and greens had issues due to mother nature and ice problems.

The superintendent along with the golf staff have done an amazing job bringing it back.

When Playing Golf at Sunday River:

Here are a few things of note to keep in mind when playing golf at Sunday River.

Riding Only

No walking, caddies or pull carts. Because of the elevation and distance between tee boxes, the course has a “riding carts only” rule. This makes sense as the golf course would be crazy to walk. A typical round takes about 4 1/2 hours even with a cart. And that is no waiting for other golfers. If walking was an option, a round of golf here would be an extremely long day.

Bag drop

Sunday River Golf Club Yardage Guide

Electric riding carts are available and can be picked up at the cart hut at the far end of the parking lot once you arrive. Pull up or park your car and walk over to the hut to get your cart.

It is very manageable and easy to access either way. The staff was extremely accommodating, friendly, and laid back.

Be sure to grab a scorecard or purchase a course booklet with detailed information especially if it is your first time playing here. The carts do not have any GPS monitors.

Clubhouse & Pro Shop

The clubhouse is located to the left of the parking lot as you drive in. Once you have your clubs and would like to check in with the pro shop, pull around in your cart before heading to the first tee. They have a great selection of logoed and non-logoed golf merchandise for purchase.

Practice Range

The driving range is conveniently located right beside the parking lot up the hill on the right. There are plenty of hitting bays and a gorgeous mountain view. Buckets of balls will need to be purchased.

For putting, the practice green is located just off the clubhouse and next to the first tee.

Wildlife

Golf in this area is like hiking out in nature. There is an opportunity to see some wildlife while playing. We did not see anything crazy, just a badger or beaver crossing one of the greens.

Apparently, there have been a few bear sightings but they often keep to themselves and stay clear of golfers. However, it is always best to be aware of any wildlife along the course. There are also opportunities to see other wildlife like moose, foxes, coyotes, deer and bald eagles in the area.

Sunset

The mountains along the course were breathtaking. Our tee time was at 3 pm and we finished up at 7:30 pm. Our original tee time was at 8 am in the morning and I am happy we changed it. We had some of the most spectacular views as the sun began to set. And sitting at the 19th hole at dusk was a perfect end to a perfect day of golf.

Sunday River Golf Club
Our view at sunset and dusk from 19th hole terrace.

19th Hole Clubhouse at Sunday River
The Clubhouse at the Sunday River.

19th Hole Clubhouse

This year, the 19th hole grill has extended its hours till 8 pm to include dinner.

Whether you are finishing up your round or you just want to enjoy a drink in the pub or have a meal at the restaurant, it is a great idea to to the 19th hole Clubhouse.

After our round, it was absolutely quiet, peaceful, and tranquil complete with purple mountains in the background.

Honestly, it was the perfect way to end an amazing day on the golf course.

Golf at Boyne Resorts

Sunday River is part of Boyne Resorts, which operates mountain ski and golf resorts around the United States including locations in Michigan, Montana, Utah, Washington, New Hampshire, Tennessee, Maine as well as Vancouver, British Columbia.

The original idea of adding golf courses to their popular ski destinations came from the original owner, Everett Kircher who was an avid skier and visionary. The need for year round or “four season destinations to fit a way of life for active families and friends who gather there” has been the thought behind Boyne’s expansions and operations.

And though skiing was the original thought, golf has become a large part of their company. Their large contingent of golf courses in Michigan is now known as “America’s Summer Golf Capital”.

Sunday River and Sugar Loaf are just a few of their growing group of resorts areas in the United States.

Stay and Play Golf Packages at Sunday River

The available stay and play packages include accommodations at one of the properties – either the Jordan Hotel or the Grand Summit, golf at Sunday River or Sugar Loaf, and complimentary breakfast. Accommodations included are conveniently located just down the road from the golf course with the Sunday River Resort area.

Though we didn’t have time to visit Sugarloaf, which is 2 hours away, we would like to go back another time as it also has several high rankings including a #1 ranking by Golfweek Magazine.

During this trip, we stayed at the Jordan Hotel, which is a mountainside property with a ski in ski out option for skiers. The property is about 1/4 mile up the road from Sunday River Golf. Super convenient.

Jordan Hotel at Sunday River Golf Club
The Jordan Hotel at Sunday River, one of several properties at the resort.

With winter as their peak season, the hotel was nice and quiet during this time of year. Another bonus for us as we were looking for a nice restful and relaxing weekend.

Our room was a spacious 1 bedroom lofted suite. It came with a kitchenette, living room area and 1/2 bathroom on the lower level, and a king bed and full bathroom upstairs in a loft on the upper level. The views of the mountains and ski trails from the balcony were gorgeous.

The Jordan Hotel is a full-service property and includes a restaurant, express cafe, fitness center, two pools (indoor and outdoor), jacuzzi, spa, boutique, business center, meeting rooms, and ample parking.

Things to Do in the Surrounding Area at Sunday River

It is a 3 1/2 hour drive from Boston. If you are traveling from the same direction, be sure to stop in at some of the antique shops along the way.

We wanted to grab a bite to eat before teeing off since we were going directly to the golf course from our long ride. I highly recommend The Lost Gull in Oxford, Maine, which is located on Main Street or Route 26 and about an hour away from Sunday River. The small parking lot was busy and there was a good flow of customers coming and going with their take out of lobster rolls and fried clams.

If you want a traditional lobster roll from Maine, this is it.

The lobster roll was served on a buttered toasted bun and the lobster was fresh with no mayonnaise, just little containers of drawn melted butter. Just the way my husband and I first discovered it on another trip to Maine 10 years ago.

If you have some downtime and are looking to get out and see the area when not golfing, check out these sights and places to see in Bethel and Newry, Maine.

Bethel Outdoor Adventure and Campground

Thinking about doing some kayaking or paddleboarding? How about relaxing on a tube and floating down the river for a few hours. Or rockhounding for minerals? Yes, you can actually mine for gems and minerals here. Check out the Bethel Outdoor Adventure and Campground at the banks of the Androscoggin River. It’s great for couples, groups, or families.

Maine Mineral & Gem Museum

Learn all about the history of mining minerals in Maine. And explore the world’s largest collection of gems and minerals, as well as meteorites from Mars and the Moon.

Sunday River Gems

Sunday River Gems Store

After visiting the Maine Mineral & Gem Museum or if you don’t have time, be sure to check out the Sunday River Gems store. We enjoyed talking with Charlie Bean, owner of this mom-and-pop shop that has been around for over 30 years. He mentioned the long history of mining for Tourmaline and Amethyst in Maine. We also found some wonderful gifts for our kids as they offered a nice collection of gems, crystals, and jewelry.

River Lanes Bowling

This state-of-the-art building offers up 10 pin bowling, billiards, corn hole, darts, arcade, and a sports bar as well as dining.

The Jordan Spa

Indulge yourself with a relaxing day at the spa or any of the spa services offered at the Jordan Hotel. Treatments include deep tissue, Swedish or couples massages, body treatments, manicure/pedicures, and facials.

Sunday River Scenic Chairlift or Zipline

During this time of year when skiing is not open, Sunday River continues to operate the chairlift and offers scenic rides and gorgeous views from atop the mountain. If you are more adventurous and want to try ziplining, there are two twin ziplines open through the summer as well.

Cho Sun Sushi Bar & Grill

Cho Sun Restaurant in Bethel Maine

Since we love to try new restaurants while we travel, we thought we would opt for Sushi and Korean food. Definitely unique in this part of Maine, where it is mostly American fare and craft beers.

We were pleasantly surprised at the amazing authenticity of the food. I opted for the Korean stew and my husband had the popular Japchae or long cellophane rice noodles with beef.

If you need suggestions, the Dolsot Bibimbap and the beef Bulgoki are a few of my other favorites.

The interior was beautifully decorated and the atmosphere was warm and friendly. The Executive Chef and son of the owner came out and spoke with us and other patrons. He gave us some great tips on the area and mentioned that the restaurant has been in Bethel, Maine providing delicious authentic Asian cuisine for the last 20 years.

Grafton Notch

Our second day in Maine was a bit of a rainout, so we were not able to do any hiking in the area. However, if we were able to, Grafton Notch State Park has a great number of trails and walking paths, scenic views, bird watching, and wildlife, as well as some of the Appalachian Trail’s most challenging climbs and hiking. It’s only about 15 minutes from Sunday River.

Weekend Getaway or Opt to Stay Even Longer

Couples Golf Getaway Weekend at Sunday River Golf
A happy golfing couple at Sunday River Golf.

What ended up being a quick weekend getaway actually made us want more.

We will surely be back up to this mountainous region of Maine that offers up an amazing place for golf, hiking, outdoor adventures, and nature lovers.

A week’s length might be more sufficient to take in all the activities it has to offer.

The Aiden Hotel is a Newly Renovated Stylish Boutique Hotel Conveniently Located in Yarmouth, MA

Looking for a place to stay for a few days down on Cape Cod, Massachusetts? Maybe for a weekend getaway or a family vacation?

During my most recent trip, I had the opportunity to stay at the Aiden Hotel at Cape Point in West Yarmouth, Massachusetts.

Formerly the Cape Point Hotel

This used to be the Cape Point Hotel before it went through a major overhaul and redesign. Now, a Best Western brand of hotel, the Aiden Hotel is not what I remembered a Best Western to be from the 1980s.

This is one of their newest brands of hotels meant to be “cool, edgy and chic”.

As someone who travels a lot and who has a family as well as being a former hotelier and hotel manager at a large four-star property, I was interested in seeing what this property had to offer.

The Aiden Hotel Brand

This particular Cape Cod property was only the second Aiden Hotel to open in the US back in 2019.

Today, it looks like there are over a dozen properties that have since opened. And not just in the United States, but spanning the world as far away as Australia, South Korea, France, Italy, and Germany.

As one of their newer brands, these hotels are aimed at embodying or reflecting the local flair of the area.

Cool New Vibe of the Aiden Hotel

Upon arriving at this particular Aiden Hotel on Cape Cod, I loved the cool, fun, trendy vibe that greeted us.

Check-in at the Aiden was seamless and the staff was extremely friendly and professional. A small sundries shop was located right next to the front desk for forgotten items like toothbrushes, aspirin, granola bars, and water.

Guest Rooms at the Aiden Hotel

The guest rooms were simple, sleek, and modern, outfitted in dark gray and white. I loved the decor that reflected the local influence.

With a minimalist touch, guests can enjoy a large flat-screen TV, rain shower, mini fridge, and in-room coffee/tea all offered in a nice comfortable space.

Guest rooms come with either 1 king or 2 queen beds as well as suites.

Review of the Guest Room

I stayed a total of two nights at the Aiden Hotel and the beds were amazingly comfortable as I slept through the night without waking up either night.

The room temperature was perfect as the air conditioner and heat were manually adjustable to my liking. Settling into my air-conditioned room after being out in the sun and summer heat all day was refreshing and helped rejuvenate me before going out for the evening.

Two things of note: There was no bathtub in the room I stayed in. And the vanity and sink area was located just outside the bathroom.

The temperature of the water in the rain shower was superb as well as the water pressure. The room overall was comfortable, fairly quiet, and clean.

Features and Amenities at the Aiden Hotel Cape Point

  • 116 Guest Rooms & Suites
  • Children Stay Free 12 & Under with an Adult

Conveniently Located on the Cape

As we were on a golf trip and golfing at nearby golf courses, what I really liked was the convenience of the location. Situated on one of the main thoroughfares, Route 28, it was easy to get to various golf courses around Cape Cod.

The hotel is almost midway down the Cape, close in proximity to restaurants, coffee shops, and grocery stores as well as many different attractions and sights.

Room rates during the peak season summer months seem fairly affordable compared to the higher more upscale resorts on the Cape. Check here for the most current rates and more info.

A quintessential cape cod country club, resort, and links golf in Mashpee, Massachusetts.

I recently had the opportunity to visit the Club at New Seabury in Mashpee, Massachusetts for a short 2-day golf getaway. Located down on beautiful Cape Cod.

If you are looking to experience Cape Cod golf within a resort and country club, this is it.

Club at New Seabury

The Club at New Seabury is a large community with residential homes that are nestled along the main drive once you pass through the gate. Though it is large, there is ample signage pointing you where you need to go.

Once at the clubhouse, drop your golf clubs at the convenient bag drop area before heading to the parking lot. Your golf clubs and cart will be ready for you at the back of the clubhouse where staff members are there to greet and help you.

Club at New Seabury Clubhouse

The club has all the amenities of a resort as well as a private country club in one gated community.

The clubhouse at New Seabury is newly remodeled throughout. The decor is what I like to call modern and sophisticated with a subtle beach and nautical theme.

The interior decor is simple with hues of cool grays, neutrals, and light blue tones from the ocean.

The clubhouse has dining for 19th hole socializing and beautiful views of the golf course and ocean, and an award-winning golf shop with an amazing array of brands in golf apparel, equipment, and accessories to choose from.

The Club at New Seabury offers extra amenities besides golf and dining. They also offer tennis, pickleball, and a state-of-the-art fitness facility as well as 2 beach clubs and poolside access with a cabana pool club.

What more could anyone want?

Golf at the Club at New Seabury

New Seabury has two championship golf courses that are stunning, unique, and challenging. The Ocean Course and the Dunes Course. Both were designed by William Mitchell and redesigned by Bruce Hepner.

The front nine on the Ocean Course is situated along the ocean, complete with ocean breezes, which can have a huge effect on how challenging the course is day to day depending on the weather and the wind.

Our particular day didn’t feel that windy at the clubhouse but once we headed out, I realized that wind was going to be a 2 club factor.

From the Clubhouse Ocean Course Club at New Seabury Mashpee

The Dunes course is set inland from the ocean and is shorter in length but beautiful and manageable. In 2019, this course was completely redesigned and renovated to improve playability and ensure more enjoyment of the golf course.

After we parked, we found our way around the back of the clubhouse and were greeted warmly by one of the golf directors, who was extremely helpful. A small world as we shared the same last name and knew each other’s respective families.

I found the entire staff to be extremely welcoming and professional.

A small putting green was available to roll a few putts in before heading to the first tee. The driving range was located up the road as well as a short game area to practice those much needed approach shots.

What really looked fun were the remote control Club Car caddies that can follow you around the course with your golf clubs in tow.

Who knows, maybe this is the future of golf caddies and carts for those who like to walk a course but don’t want to push, pull or ride.

My Experience Playing the Ocean Course at New Seabury

This was very much the tale of 2 golf courses. From the start when you are teeing off on hole #1, though it still didn’t feel all that windy, once I hit my drive, I noticed the wind knocked the ball down once it was airborne. I remember thinking, “oh this is going to be an interesting round”.

I played the front nine extremely well and believe it was because I had to stay as grounded as I could from being blown over by gusts of wind.

Balance was a big thing.

My sun hat was put away for the front nine once it flew off my head a few different times. It was hard to focus on my shot for fear that my hat would blow away into the ocean.

Ocean Course Club at New Seabury
Hole #1 fairway. Photo Credit: Lynn on the Links

The wind was a huge factor on the front nine. I loved the links-style golf here and enjoyed the experience. Depending on the day, the weather, and the amount of wind, a golfer needs to be ready for any type of golf on a links golf course like this.

Ocean Course Links Golf at Club of New Seabury

Once we made the turn to the 10th tee though and drove to the other side of the clubhouse, it was a completely different golf course.

Back 9 Ocean Course Club at New Seabury
Tale of 2 Courses - Back 9 Holes Ocean Course Club at New Seabury

I almost thought we had gotten mixed up and were playing the Dunes course. From the 10th hole in, the fairways were beautifully manicured with rolling hills and some doglegs.

And no wind or ocean breeze whatsoever.

It was so different that my golf game changed and I ended up not playing the back nine as well as the front.

All my normal habits came back.

All in all, we had a great time and loved the experience of playing golf at New Seabury. It was a very interesting golf course and I liked the two different styles within the one course.

Club at New Seabury 18th Hole Finish
I’m a happy golfer finishing on the 18th hole.

I would very much like to play the Dunes course so I can compare the two. I’d like to see how it compares as well as see how all the new changes play into the course design and playability.

Club at New Seabury Scorecard

From the Black Tees or the tips, the yardage of the Ocean Course was a whopping 7105 yards with a slope rating 76.5/134.

From the Green Tees or the most forward tees, it was still a long track as it plays at 5573 yards. The slope rating from here was 74.3/127 for the women and 68.3/120 for the men.

These were the shortest tees I could play on the Ocean Course which honestly was quite long. I have been playing for quite some time and could handle the longer distance. And if you like a challenge or hit a long ball, the Ocean Course is great.

If you would like to play a shorter course, the Dunes Course Black Tees are at 6041 yards and the forward White Tees are at 5114 yards. Both of which might be more manageable for shorter hitters. However, you would not get the same links-style course play that the Ocean course brings.

Can You Golf at New Seabury If You Are Not a Member?

Yes, the public can actually play golf and use the amenities at New Seabury.

While it is a private country club, there is also a small resort within the club. As a bonus, guests that stay in the cottages and stay overnight are able to access the club, the golf and its amenities.

During the summer months or peak season, there is typically a 3-night minimum stay required.

If you would like to stay here, be sure to reserve early as the Club at New Seabury books up well in advance with all the weddings, special events, and guests who are looking to purchase a home within New Seabury residential community.

The club hosts many special events, as well as charity and golf outings because of its premier location, challenging golf, and beautiful setting.

I actually just signed up for a tournament that is open to the public later this year that will be held at New Seabury and am looking forward to playing the Ocean course again.

How much is a Round of Golf at New Seabury?

If you are staying as a guest, the current cost of an 18 hole round on the Ocean Course is $170, and the Dunes Course is $150. These rates may change from year to year and season to season.

Popponesset Inn at New Seabury

There are five different restaurants to choose from within the Club at New Seabury. Coming off the course for a 19th hole refreshment, you’ll likely go to 95 Shore which is located in the clubhouse.

For casual dining overlooking the beach and Nantucket Sound, be sure to check out the Popponnesset Inn.

We opted to dine after our round at the Popponnesset Inn Restaurant, which provided a lighter fare and some wonderful seafood entrees and dishes. We enjoyed being on the water for dinner that evening, as the restaurant is right off the club’s private beach.

The interior was quiet and had a casual beach setting where we felt relaxed and were able to unwind with friends before heading in for the night.

The cup of clam chowder seemed to be a popular choice and did not disappoint. I was extremely happy with my Salmon Rice Bowl which came with black Thai rice and bok choy. Very light and flavorful.

While eating, a local high school prom was taking place in the Popponnesset Inn’s larger function room. I remember thinking that this would make such a wonderful venue for other special events, like weddings, family gatherings, reunions, or birthday celebrations as the setting is gorgeous right off the beach overlooking Nantucket Sound.

And it can accommodate overnight guests as well as provide the opportunity to play golf or tennis or relax around their pool or private beach.

Definitely a premier choice for a vacation on the water along Cape Cod.

For more information, check out the Club at New Seabury and the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce.

Harmon Golf – Improve Your Golf Game and Take It to the Next Level

As an avid golfer who is constantly thinking about how to improve my golf game, I have always been intrigued by Harmon Golf in Rockland, Massachusetts.

Since it is only located about 20 minutes away, I decided to attend a golf clinic offered on course management and mental strategies. A very important topic that I love to learn about.

And when it was time for me to upgrade my golf clubs this past winter, I decided to get a custom club fitting. To which I turned to Harmon Golf again for their Master Club Fitting services.

The club fitting was thorough. And such a personalized experience. If you haven’t had the chance to be fitted for golf clubs, I highly recommend it. If you are interested in all that a custom club fitting at Harmon Golf entails, read Club Fitting Review with a Master Club Fitter which provides a detailed account of my experience with Master Club Fitter, Jonathan Almeida.

What Is Harmon Golf?

Is it a golf club?  A practice facility?  A golf academy?  A fitness center?

Yes. To all of the above.

It’s not a traditional private or public golf club.  It’s not a typical golf range facility either.  The tagline is “Learn. Practice. Play. Better.”  True to its word, the facility provides a place for golfers of all levels to come train and improve their golf games.

9 Hole Golf Course

Through their various memberships offered, golfers have access to a 9 hole golf course and a 9 hole short course that is perfect for practicing the short game.

9 Hole Golf Short Course

Having a short par 3 or wedge course with plenty of bunkers and greens allows you the ability to practice your short game, which is safe to say where a good majority of practice should be spent.

Year-Round Golf Practice Range

Harmon Golf also has a practice range facility that offers both an outdoor practice range and partially covered hitting bays with Top Tracer technology. Providing year-round practice in New England weather is important as the official golf season can be short.

Golf Academy – Golf Instruction & Club Fitting

The top-notch golf academy & learning center has earned high marks from Golf Digest. Recognized for their excellence in golf instruction and club fitting, both are listed in the magazine’s Top 50 Instructors and Top 100 Clubfitters in America.

Golf Fitness Center

A growing trend over the last decade has been golf fitness. Now more than ever before, golfers are looking at how they can elevate their games to a higher level. Training the body so it is stronger and more flexible can help with improved power and movement.

Harmon Golf has been in the golf fitness game for many years seeing it as an important part of the game. Their fitness trainers are certified with TPI (Titleist Performance Institute) and are experts in golf-specific exercises.

Dining Facilities

The facility also includes a full-service restaurant and bar for refreshments, meals, and post-round gatherings.  Perfect for after-round gatherings and socializing.

Family Operated and Golf for Everyone

Welcome to Harmon Golf Boston

Greg Simeone, President of Harmon Golf wanted to provide a place for anyone and everyone to come play, practice and socialize.

Harmon Golf provides a place for everyone, no matter their age, gender, or skill level.  They believe anyone should be able to play.

Juniors and kids practically grow up here at this facility, sometimes spending their whole day participating in junior clinics, hitting balls at the range, and playing 9 holes with their friends.  What greater place to send your children?  Hanging out with like-minded kids, not glued to their electronic devices or TV all day.  And learning a lifelong activity that will provide enjoyment for years to come.

Harmon Golf Member Perspective

I reached out to a good friend of mine who has personal experience as a member of Harmon Golf. With the family membership, her entire family has been able to utilize the facility in different ways.

“We used Harmon Golf Club as a family for a couple of seasons, taking advantage of the exceptional practice facilities – in addition to the range, multiple putting greens, chipping areas and a par 3 course. My daughter and I took lessons at Harmon to kickoff the season.  My husband played in the Club Championship.  And we enjoyed having lunch at Harmon in addition to working on our golf throughout the season.”

– K. Kennedy

Their son, Conor, has been a Harmon Golf Club member for the last 4 years, joining after they moved to the area from Pennsylvania.

Conor is currently a Senior at Boston College High School and Captain of the Varsity Golf Team. Since becoming a member, he works out and/or practices at Harmon almost daily.

I asked him a few questions about the club for a more personal perspective for anyone interested in the club.

Q: How has Harmon Golf helped your golf game?

A: Harmon Golf helped me immensely with my game through the many different outlets for practice. It cannot be overstated how well equipped Harmon is to help golfers of all levels improve their games. For starters, having the indoor simulators and covered hitting bays with top tracer technology allows you to practice year-round while seeing your ball striking stats. There are also several opportunities to improve your short game with the “short course” par 3 wedge course, a 90-yard wedge range, and several green complexes to practice putting.

No matter how busy it may be at Harmon, there is always somewhere to go and practice your short game. Also, the 9-hole course provides a good test to all golfers. I have improved my game by learning strategies to play the course in a more effective and conservative manner, while also improving my ball striking by playing away from the looming water all around the course.

Q: How is the caliber of training?

A: Both the golf and fitness instructors are eager to work with those who want to improve, and they provide useful tips. There is no better club to practice your game in New England than Harmon Golf.

The gym and training staff at Harmon Golf provide key tips and opportunities to improve your fitness in a way that directly impacts your game.

When I started there I was a 12 handicap, and I have worked my way down to the low single digits.

Q: How does the club offer winter or off-season training?

A: Many Harmon members hit balls throughout the winter in the covered bays, practice on the indoor golf simulators, as well as continue golf-related workouts in the gym.

Harmon is an excellent year-round golf club!

New Addition – Top Tracer Technology & Entertainment

Greg Simeone is excited to announce their newest addition to the facility. State of the art hitting bays with monitors much like you would see at a golf entertainment facility.

The popularity of these partially indoor golf spaces has grown in recent years, providing a form of entertainment and socializing in the golf space, and can also be used to help improve your game.

Jonathan Almeida, Director of Club Fitting mentioned that once things open up a bit more, this additional outdoor hitting area will be a great addition to the club offerings. He stated that the outdoor patio will use monitors that use the same Top Tracer technology.

“That is the tracer line when watching the PGA Tour on tv. The same monitors and technology are always on and functional under the covered section of the driving range. An amazing practice tool to get yardages, and proximities to the targets out on the range. All of the targets are in the system as well as the ability to play simulated golf, compete in long drive, and closet to the pin contests, with anyone at any other station on the range. If you have logged in throughout the day there is a leaderboard and you can check your stats against anyone else who has logged in to compete”.

Built and installed just before the pandemic hit, they have had to use the space for outdoor dining, however will be utilized as soon as indoor golf facilities and restaurants are opened back up again.  The club is excited in looking ahead and believes these new hitting stations will be a great place to come, relax, hit some balls, compete and socialize at the same time.

More Info on Harmon Golf

As a golfer who is constantly aiming to improve, Harmon Golf Club provides it all.  From golf instruction, expert club fittings by a Master Club Fitter to TPI certified golf fitness trainers, this is the place to go for lowering scores, handicaps, improving one’s game, and socializing with a community of other golfers.

A Growing Appreciation for Donald Ross, Architect and Designer of Golf Courses

Essex County Club Clubhouse from Fairway

Essex County Club

This Fall, I had the chance to play several outstanding golf courses and I am starting to appreciate golf in a whole new light. Playing different courses and playing with many different golfers has opened my eyes and given me a whole new perspective on golf.

Essex County Club, located in Manchester, Massachusetts was such a special experience. Why? Because it was personally designed by Donald Ross.

The course opened in 1893 and was one of the first social clubs in the area that included golf and was actually a popular summer getaway for those who wanted to vacation near the ocean.

I wrote an article for NewEngland.Golf about my experience playing there and how truly special it was. I am realizing that golf, where I live, has some of the oldest golf courses in the country.

My home golf course, Cohasset Golf Club is among them, which opened in 1894 just 1 year after Essex CC. These courses were not 18 holes though, many of them started with 6 holes or 9 holes and then years later expanded to the full 18 hole courses they are today.

Essex CC was one of my favorite courses I played this year. I would also love to play it again, actually a few more times as there are so many nuances and trouble to get into and I’d love to get to know it better.

Donald Ross

This particular round I played was not only challenging because it was designed by Donald Ross, but it was unfamiliar and a newer course for me.

The course was undeniably a Donald Ross Course. Working with the natural terrain and left in tact, he was able to carve out a golf course that has remained challenging to golfers far and wide.

Essex County Club 18 Hole Donald Ross
18th Hole at Essex County Club

The fairways on the first few holes were open and fairly straightforward, but long. Bunkering and classic Donald Ross mounding near the greens could get anyone in trouble even while trying to play safe.

Essex County Club - Mounds by Donald Ross

Fescue and long grass allowed to grow naturally along the course. The topography of the course was different the whole way through, changing as the land changed.

Fescue and Boulders at Essex County Club
Essex County Club - Hole 17
A view of the approach to the steep 17th hole green.

Uphill, downhill tee shots and greens cut out from hillsides with the boulders and rock still intact. A straight fairway made challenging because of steep rolling hills on each side. A golf course that truly makes you think and forces you to change up your game throughout the round.

According to the book, Discovering Donald Ross, The Architect and His Golf Courses by Bradley S. Klein, Donald Ross was a Scotsman from Dornoch “who learned greenkeeping and club making from legendary Old Tom Morris in St. Andrews”. Donald Ross is known for designing many great golf courses around the United States. But his most famous ones include Oakland Hills, Seminole, French Lick, Inverness, and Pinehurst No.2. Just to name a few as there are so many.

What made Essex so special was that he was the head golf professional here from 1911-1913 and actually lived on the property overseeing his designs and the work.

Donald Ross Home at Essex County Club from Hole
The yellow house that Donald Ross lived in as head golf professional at Essex County Club.

If you are interested in learning more about Donald Ross, this amazing book that I referred to above is one that I highly recommend.

It would make a great golf gift as well for anyone who plays on a Donald Ross course or is a fan of the great architect and designer.

The hardcover coffee table book is chock full of history and pictures and goes into a great amount of detail on his background, his designs, ideas, and lists out the more famous of his course designs.

Mr. Klein is the architecture editor for Golfweek magazine and received the Donald Ross Award for lifetime achievement by the American Society of Golf Course Architects, and has written many golf books over the years.

Having played a few Donald Ross courses over the past year, I am becoming a huge fan and it has sparked a curiosity in me on golf course design and especially the history of these golf courses.

I am grateful to have the opportunity to play Essex County Club and hope to play many more courses around the area and maybe even travel a bit. On my bucket list is definitely Pinehurst.

If you have the opportunity to play a Donald Ross course or different golf courses, be sure to read up on the history of the course. There are always some interesting nuggets of information that will make your round that much more fun and unique.

I’d love to hear your experiences. Have you played a Donald Ross golf course? There are so many!

Are you a fan of his? Be sure to comment below on your thoughts or experiences.

South Shore Country Club Review

South Shore Country Club, located in Hingham, Massachusetts is a course that is located in the town that I live so I do have a bit of a bias towards it.

After a bit of time off from golf, while my children were young, this is where I came back to the game. This tough golf course made me a better golfer today and though it was a challenge at times, I stuck with it.

I am glad I did.

I love the fact that it is a challenging track will many hills, elevated greens and blind shots.

This makes you think more about your shots and the risk versus reward. Do you want to score well and have a nice round and if so, do you risk finding trouble?

Today, I have a better appreciation of South Shore Country Club and actually quite enjoy playing here. It is not just the layout or design of the golf course though, it is the people and the folks who manage the course and work here that make it a special place.

The golf course is truly a diamond in the rough and is a golf course that is supported by the town and its residents.

Not only does it offer golf but an array of other activities and programs that are enjoyed by many. We’re talking about weekday bowling leagues, kids bowling birthday parties, swim and tennis programs as well as junior golf and ladies golf clinics. Everyone can find something here that they can participate in.

Environmentally Responsible Golf With a Challenge

Widows Walk Golf Course - Environmentally Friendly

Widows Walk Golf Course was one of the very first golf courses I played when we first moved to the area in 1997. Having just opened, the course was brand new and I remember two things about it.

It was hard.

And I lost a lot of golf balls.

So when I had the chance to play it again this year, 20+ years later, I was interested to see if I still had the same thoughts.

I was a new golfer back then too, only having played for a few years.

We had signed up as a two some, and asked if there was anyone else we could play with.

First of all, I thought it would be helpful if others knew the course and could help direct us on where to aim, and what trouble might lie ahead. And also for the social aspect. I really do enjoy getting to know other people.

And what better way than on a golf course where you spend over four hours together?

We ended up being paired with another two some, a man and a woman. Neither lived in the area, but worked together nearby.

The woman had taken up the game because of the passion that her boss had for the game and they often went out for 9 holes after work. Widows Walk was their go-to favorite because of the proximity, the challenge it provided, and the amazing value.

What I love about this course is that it was the first-ever environmental demonstration course in the United States. They had 3 sets of greens with varying types of materials used in building them up and were able to see how each of them would hold up over the years.

The original plan was to design a course that would be environmentally responsible. Meaning it would preserve as much of the natural landscape as possible and attempt to use as little utilities and resources like water as possible.

Widows Walk Golf Course Walking Bridge
A walking bridge through the woods at Widows Walk Golf Course.

According to their website, “As a commitment to the environment Widow’s Walk became a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary course in 2002.  This program ensures that we continue to be a benefit to the environment by establishing avian nesting box programs, providing habitats for numerous other species of animals, and using integrated pest management to apply the least amount of water, pesticides and fertilizer as possible.”

There were some growing pains in the beginning where there were too many demands and played at capacity in the first years.

However, I think they have done a great job in keeping with the original plan for the environment and creating an enjoyable course that is now more playable and yet still challenging.

And the great part is that this time around, I didn’t lose any golf balls!

Compete In Amateur Golf Tournaments Around the World

I had to share this!  I just found out about it and it is such an amazing opportunity if you love to golf, love to compete and are a recreational amateur golfer.

Did you know there is a way to play competitively around the world, as long as you have a handicap under 30?  As part of trying to connect with other golfers and people in the golf industry, I met Susan Sheehan, a recreational golfer who had just returned from playing golf internationally.

I perked up when she mentioned world travel and golf because well, it sounded very different and I was intrigued.  And I love finding out unique playing opportunities.

With further inquiry, she mentioned that someone like me (a recreational mid handicap golfer) could participate.

The World Amateur Golfers Championship and Invitational

I was able to reconnect with Ms. Sheehan as well as Jim Smith, who is one of the US Partners for the World Amateur Golfers Championship or WAGC-USA.

The World Amateur Golfers Championship (WAGC) has been around for 25 years and was started by Sven Tumba, a Swedish hockey player who had a passion for golf.

He wanted to create an Olympic style event for amateurs and recreational golfers, complete with an opening flag ceremony.  Over 40 different countries participate and compete in the WACG and it has been active since 1995.

The WAGC has been held in places like Malaysia, South Africa, Spain, Turkey, Thailand, the Dominican Republic, and the United States.

With this incredible number of international countries represented, it is treated as an international event by the host countries.

The Format of the WAGC

As long as you are over the age of 16, male or female, you can compete and try to qualify.  It is open to those with a handicap of 25 or lower (although recently a 6th flight was added to a handicap limit of 30).  Men and women can compete against each other using their respective tee boxes or yardages and handicaps.

Each country has a team consisting of 6-7 players, representing each of the 5 flights.  There are 2 different tournaments.

The World Amateur Golf Invitational

The (WAGI) or World Amateur Golfers Invitational is more of a business and informal tournament played with sponsors and guests.

“World Amateur Golfers Invitational is a separate tournament that gives golfers the opportunity to share in the exciting “WAGC experience” of a world-wide tour-like championship event without first having to qualify.  Business executives with VIP clients, national agents with sponsors, loving couples, celebrities, royalty and other enthusiastic golfers from all corners of the globe are regular participants.”

The World Amateur Golf Championship

The Championship is the competitive tournament played over 72 holes of competition where members compete individually against others in their flight.  It is the largest amateur competition in the world.

Individual scores and results are then added together at the end for a cumulative team score.

National tournaments are played in your home country to qualify for a spot on the team for the world championship.

What it Means to Earn a Spot on Team USA

Earning a spot means an all-expense paid trip to the World Amateur Golf Championship weeklong event, which provides everything including airfare, transportation & transfers, hotel room & accommodations, meals, official Team USA apparel and golf bag, entertainment, and 6 rounds of golf.

Both Smith and Sheehan have earned spots on Team USA in the past and describe the times they’ve had as just incredible.

To play golf and do what you love.  To play competitively for your country on an international stage.  To travel and see the world. To meet interesting people from many different backgrounds and cultures.  These all make it a life-changing experience.

World Amateur Golfers World Final Highlights

With over 375 golfers and another 300-400 attendees, it is a relatively large international golf tournament.  For players and spouses, partners and friends, entertainment is provided each night. From the opening flag ceremony to beach parties and culture nights to the closing awards presentation, there is something planned for most of the week.

Golf Competition and Travel

If this sounds like something you’re interested in and you are an amateur golfer, like to travel, and compete against golfers from other countries, click here for more info.  There are 30 – 40 qualifying tournaments held each year in the US and it takes 3 tournaments to win, in order to earn your spot for the World Amateur Golfers Championship.

Check it out and good luck!!
